How "old school" graphics worked

I love how all aspects of video games do stuff like this. The goal is to make it look/feel good, not make it be 100% accurate.

Like for example with gravity, real world physics usually feel too floaty. So lots of games increase the strength of gravity during the second half of a jump.

Also more in line with the op, lots of games render in black and white at full resolution, but render colors at quarter resolution. Still looks almost as good.
