I think this announcement will actually help xbo sales.

Practically everyone except xbox fanboys thought it was coming to PS4. Xbo fanboys will still buy it on xbo, and everyone else now knows the ps4 port is still really far off. Some gamers would wait a few months but not a full year. This pushes them into the xbo camp.

Probably still going to buy the game used so Square Enix doesn't get a dime from me.

It was always going to do bad.  Call of Duty + Halo 5.  Fallout 4 launching the same day doesn't help.  Microsoft essentially paid to send this game to die.  Why they were worried that Halo wasn't enough to hold people off of Uncharted is beyond me.  Halo is the bigger franchise.  Whether the decline of the franchise is real however, we'll find out in a few months.  Tomb Raider actually has the best chance of selling well next fall on the PS4.  Other than Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed; it'll be pretty dry.  Unless Horizon launches in the fall.

I think there's a strong chance that GT7 will launch as well as santa monica's new game. Since rockstar aren't launching this year their next game must be next fall too. I think tomb raider PS4 will have an equally rough ride of it.

Square Enix has really done iced up on the ROTR deal. Pre-orders have not been good, thus far, according to LogN, Kagari, and Abdiel. They're actually lower than the Tomb Raider DE preorders.

EDIT: I found Kagari's comment and another Abdiel comment.

It's taking 3rd parties a long time to come to terms with xbo's situation. Wonder if this is the last big xbox moneyhat we see this gen.

I can say for a certainty that we won't be seeing any MS moneyhats with Japanese publishers. We'll definitely see some moneyhatting with western publishers, but it'll be no more than timed-exclusive DLC, exclusive beta, etc.

Square Enix has especially been having bad luck with the XBO. Preorders for ROTR are tracking behind those of a bloody remaster; Type-0 (XBO) sold under the minimum print order in the US; and FFXV & KH3 preorders have been laughably low for the XBO.

Probably why Square Enix announced the other consoles.  There was probably a minimum pre-order amount in the contract and it wasn't reached.

I wonder what SE will do if that actually happens...

Cancel the Xbox version and run with the money.

That would be crazy, but I doubt the PS4 version will be up for preorder before XBO releases.

they iced up the marketing for this one IMO. it was announced at E3 2014 with a CGI trailer, and we seen literally next to nothing until E3 2015. the first gameplay video at E3 was honestly under whelming, it was just platforming and for a few minutes, for example Uncharted 4's PSX reveal was miles better than Tomb Raiders. the whole "i must become an explorer to be great" theme doesnt seem to relate much with the audience and spur excitement.

i have no doubt the game will be good at the very least. but the marketing efforts have been bad IMO.

i wouldn't say last but the money hats are going to be more and more expensive for MS the bigger the disparity is between xbox/ps4.   i think ms could snag some of the riskier project though,..  projects like sunset overdrive (new IP) would probably be happy to take on a development/marketing partner.   those project will probably prefer to partner with sony this gen but i just can't see sony saying yes to absolute ever offer that crosses their table.  some things sony will pass on (or offer worse terms) and ms might take on those projects.

although maybe you don't qualify those as "big".

I'd qualify those as big, just not moneyhats  ;)

Microsoft funding/publishing a 3rd party game is 100% ok and they for sure will never stop doing that.
