Is this thread premature? Yes.

However I'm willing to bet $20,000 of forum money that it's true. I have zero inside knowledge on this, or anything related to this. My conclusion is solely based on the following.

Aura7541 posted this in the PlayStation thread. New FCC reports show Sony is releasing two new SKUs. One with a 500gb hard drive, and one with a 1,000gb hard drive. However what's really interesting is that these are still part of the first series, meaning they aren't slim versions. The size is the same, and the external look will probably be the same.

Yet they are 300 grams lighter, use 20 less watts, and 0.2 less amps. An average CD drive weighs around 300 grams, uses 20 watts, and around .2 amps.

It's beyond coincidence levels. CD drive is gone!

Hahahaha I seriously spent 10 minutes editing your post to try and fix it. Never even noticed the missing forward slash  :P

So then back to the op.

Why would Sony do this?!?!?

You cracked it and you didn't even mean to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By removing the disc drive, the new model can switch to a 3.5" hard drive. Saves money by ditching discs, and saves money by using a cheaper hard drive.

Yeap... it can works but I don't believe Sony will do that... makes no sense after all used games retail thing.

It makes perfect sense. Sell it fo $50 cheaper, and then make more money off the buyers in the long run. A digital sale gives Sony more cash than a retail sale.

I don't believeyou gif*

How much does a controller weigh?

Removing the disc drive will be a very dumb move on Sony's part. Why alienate so much of the userbase?

It is possible for Sony to make those reductions without taking out the disc drive. The PS3 slim, for instance, went through multiple internal revisions where the Cell shrunk and wattage decreased. Perhaps the mass, wattage, and current reductions are coming from halving the number of GDDR5 chips, shrinking the APU die, and using a smaller cooling system.

kitler53

i would have bought a disc driveless sku with a bigger harddrive.

Why would they leave the dimensions the same? They can shrink the beast quite a bit without the drive.
