Why do gamers associate fun with quality?

I've seen people just completely dismiss games as quality titles for the reason that it isn't fun. Then praise titles as quality that are fun but not have much else in production quality.

Seriously, these two things are not synonymous. Fun is a specific quality of a game but an overall quality game does not need to be fun.  Also, fun games might not really be quality either. I had fun with some indie games at an indie game convention but hardly any were quality titles. One was glitch as hell but still kind of fun. Why is there a huge misconception that the point of games is to have fun? Again, point of games is entertainment and that could be synonymous with fun in certain contexts but not always because entertainment can come in other forms different than fun.

Because we care about public acceptance. If we play trashy games then gaming itself is trashy. However if the games we're playing are beautiful masterpieces, then gaming is a valid activity beyond just being brain dead entertainment.

Most gamers want the industry to increase in cultural acceptance. You know like the whole gamergate "not all gamers" thing. Probably just subconsciously since they feel the hobby is under threat, they want to advocate that the games they play are good on the fundamental level.

Haha, I see where your thought process has come from but to clarify in what I was talking about. I've seen comments from people complete completely dismissing a game because it isn't fun. Then, they say a game is high quality while it only has a few qualities done well but is a fun game. I changed the title because I mostly see it on that fan base. I'll change it back and clarify op.

I don't have a problem with gamers wanting their games to be fun or even putting fun at the top of their priority list. What I do have a problem with is when they try to define what's fun or not and stick the definition in a little box.

People have different definitions of fun. What is fun to one person won't be necessarily fun for another (e.g. the Souls series).

I have a problem when people think that a game isn't fun for them, it isn't fun for everyone.
Also, when people assume that when they had problems with a game, everyone else must have.

"Skyrim was absolutely unplayable on PS3."
"The Last of Us has very bad AI."

This.

For example, I don't really find most games fun that Nintendo fans do...and they don't find most games fun that I do.

For example, I have a huge issue with pacing in games. I notice a lot of people don't care much about it.

i'd phase it, "think that a game isn't fun for them, it isn't fun for anyone".

and fudge those guys.  i don't like GTA but i recognize that is only because i don't appreciate the genre not because the game is trash.

"not worthy of any GOTY awards, let alone GOTG"
Well darn, here I thought I was entitled to my own opinion.  I was wrong, TLoU is just a bad game.  :P.

Well, there's that, but also people feel differently about pacing.  Sometimes even on different play throughs.
Like playing Uncharted 3 the first time, pacing felt slow to me.  Second time felt much faster.
The Last of Us started out slow, but I wouldn't change the pacing at all.  Its feels perfect now.

Exactly.
Like okay, some games might be objectively bad, but even then there can be enjoyment out of them.
Its just annoying that people try to tell you, you're wrong because they have a different opinion.
Super Mario Galaxy is amazing, game of the gen.
The Last of Us is good, but not great.
Frankly I have the opposite opinion, almost.
But no, I'll just share the opinion, because 'f my thoughts.

I agree. I hate it when people try to assert their opinions as the right one. People in general should be more accepting of other people's opinions.(both ways)
All aboard the hype train.

BasilZero

Because the "Fun" factor can be a factor to how they judge/qualify a game in terms of its quality :o

Different opinions, something something which other people have mentioned already.
