I'm so tired of the gamers feeling entitled

Quote from: the-Pi-guy on Yesterday at 04:38 PMThis drove me nuts with God of War Ragnarok. Some were complaining that it wasn't another reinvention.
my only real complaint with GoW:R was the ending.

like there was a lot of building up to this "gran finale" and its like they tried really hard to make it an epic set piece but it didn't really achieve its goals.  it really felt like the kind of thing they should have brough ND in for because they are really good at this specific kind of set piece.  the kind that is very much on rails but still feels like you have agency driven by a sense of urgency.

oh, and i felt like freya's turn from enemy to ally wasn't fully justified.

but all in all it was a great game.  and it had some absolute amazing moments along the way.  sometimes i wish i didn't have such a massive backlog so that i'd feel compelled to replay some of the greats again.

it's not just gamers but yeah,.. agreed 110%.

in a word "entitlement" might be the biggest sin of our current age.  companies feel entitled to profit without investment.   politicians feel entitled to elections without service.  customers feel entitled to products without payment.

greed is just unchecked at all levels right now.

physical disc discontinued January 2028.

seems like a weird time to announce this.  obviously this means ps6 won't ship with a drive.  probably not even as an add-on.  seems like something that would be timed with the ps6 announcement.

please don't announce ps6 now ..

and even though I'm 100% digital for games I still want a drive option.  literally right now I have these rented from the library on disc:
1. housemaid
2. Star Trek next Gen movie collection
3. star trek lower desk S1
4. the assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford
5. pout pout fish
6. hoppers

really, you're a disc guy?  would have pegged you as digital.

the more i think about this the more i think this is really an unforced error by sony.
1. ps5 was sold with a drive.   people bought a ps5 expecting a drive to be supported.   it would make more sense to draw the line on the ps5/ps6 line then to just pick a date and say we are done.    i don't know when ps6 is launching but 2028 isn't far enough into the future to think ps5 isn't still getting a ton of support.

2. by announcing this sony is taking full blame.   right now GTA has no disc but people are playing TT.   i think fewer and fewer games would have shipped on disc as time marches on but the blame could have been distributed and now sony is taking 100% of the customer anger.   xbox has effectively stopped supporting discs already but they aren't getting the rage for it because the policy change wasn't announced and so the change is being phased in over time.

3. sony could have gone to a limited run type thing for extra $$.   instead of making XX number of discs up front they could have done a disc only availble via pre-order.   for those guys that really want a disc you'd be getting them to buy day-1 at full price and i'll bet a lot of them would get ordered even just by scalpers wanting to grab a couple thousand discs to resell once the game becomes unavailable without resellers.

4. isn't sony still making discs for movies anyways?   i can't believe there will be a massive cost savings when the equipment is still in use for movies which is having a resurgance in popularity according to Pi.

There are lots of articles that talk about resurgence.
But I think for the most part things are just stable.

The UHD-BD format did have some growth last year for the first time ever.

The sad thing is that I generally buy games digitally. Which I started doing because the kids would get into them.

Unlike games, movies are very portable. I can rip them pretty easily and stream them to like 8 different devices in my home.

I feel like it's harder with games, because I feel like the bigger failure point is the console itself.
