But why?

Obviously it doesn't matter what color the pixels in the image are, but on how our brain percieves them. Do 70% of people not have enough experience with materials and lighting conditions to correctly determine the base color?

I guess as a game dev I have an unfair advantage. I'm always looking and watching how light affects a scene. It's something Ideal with almost daily so I guess I percieve the dress from that angle.

Yes, and color blindness has some to do with it as well as its an optical illusions.
But in this case people with 100% good vision are sawing white and gold due the illuminations conditions.

You can find this phenomenon in Wikipedia (I have the PT link: http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilusão_de_óptica)

A good example:

A and B are the same color but your eyes see different color to fit the "right" color.

Yes, that part of the illusion. And most people have some degree of color blindness.

So pretty much what I was thinking.

You white gold people, have you ever used photoshop or messed with white balancing?

I could see blue and black for five seconds while it smooth get clean until white and gold... it was interesting.

I couldn't repeat the experience anymore... my brain already fixed the white and gold :P

hold your finger over the middle of the pic and you'll see the top and bottom squares are the same color.  no need to be a sucker about it...

Yes they are the same.

Also I didn't expect anyone here to see white and gold, so I'm switching the title.

I see white and gold. I saw blue and kind of black on my laptop though. The split was about 50/50 at school it seemed. Some people even saw blue and gold.

I tihnk its because our eyes try to remove the chromatic bias caused by the sunlight.   the bright sun is shining blue and white light down, so our eyes tries to remove one or the other, leading to some who see white, and some who see blue.
