Shaun Himmerick (executive producer on MKX) stated on twitter that the subscription services are not needed for any feature of MKX.

I thought this was pretty interesting, considering only F2P games seemed to not need the services, where as most retail games did.

thats very interesting, I wonder if they are using their own servers for this then. If it's p2p then Sony / MS would probably still require it for using their services.

well games with their own servers don't require ps+ on ps4... ie: FFXIV, but do on XBL...

no but there is a skyrim type game that was / is MMO on PC coming to console that requires sub and on Xone you need XBL to play it as well

True. It's TES: Online. The game itself does not require a monthly subscription
