I really love good lore. Like the star wars lore is great. Same goes for the killzone lore.

So I decided to make a general discussion about it. To get the ball rolling, here are some questions.

1. What games do you think do it best?

2. What's your prefered way to learn about lore in game?

3. What are some common things you don't like about lore?

If you want to look into same game lore, skyrim, killzone, journey, fez, mass effect, halo, portal, and dishonored all have some good stuff.

VizionEck.  Really good.
I mean I know nothing!

Hmmm tough to say.

Legend

1. Journey

The game has mysteries, making you naturally want to seek out answers. Those answers might not be that deep, but they are well constructed and add to the game.

2. I like mysteries, and wtf style twists. Don't ever bother reading anything like in game books because the writing is dull. I usually though just read up on it online.

3. I HATE when games try to justify themselves with lore. The Elder Scrolls is a big offender of this. Between Oblivion and Skyrim they changed the way one of the breed's looks. Instead of just admitting they liked the new designs better, they made a stupid and complex in game reason for why their appearance has changed.

A similar thing I dislike is when games do something that contradicts with their lore, so then they over complicate their lore in order to explain the new changes.

DrakeSnake

1. Metal Gear Solids series, Mass Effect series, Soul's games, Silent Hill series (the first 3 games), just the top of my head.

2. All the games i Mentioned has different way of introducing their world, but if i have to say i guess the best way is to show of the lore's atmosphere. Make you feel like your in the lore's world. Like the feeling of dredd in Silent Hill or the feeling of overwhelming challenge in the Soul's games.

3. Probably generic token style lores like dragon age. They have interesting ideas for world, but it just feels a lot of them are forced. I also hate inconsistency, dragon age is guilty of this too like how they cant keep a consistent look of a Qunari.

Star trek has great lore. I really liked in The Last of us picking up notes on the street that told a personal story. I also liked how the stories were a button away.
All aboard the hype train.

Is tlou lore deep into what's happened, or is it just world building stuff?

Define world building,

It's actually more probably world building if we have the same definition. It makes the world more real, atmospheric, and relatable. I was surprised how interesting some of them were though. Ish's story was probably the best.

Define world building,

Lore fleshing out things that add to the atmosphere/world, but don't have any effect on the world at large. It doesn't matter what the lore is, just that it exists to fill in a void.

Maybe a different word would be better to define this.

That's what I was thinking.

I remember Ish's story kinda. Wasn't it something to do with a brother?

It was about a person who went on the water when the outbreak happened. He came back and and lived in their sewers. He eventually met traders and he contemplated telling them about the sewer. He decided actually risking to live with others than just surviving alone. They had a base for a ton of people. They even educated kids and had a place for them. Somehow though infected got in and killed a lot of people. He and some others including his love interest had to move on and his story is left open ended.

Yeah I personally don't find that type of stuff too interesting. In tlou it's kinda good because Naughty Dog can get you to feel for what Ish has been through, but in most games these world building lore thing-a-lings are just "meh" to me.

Only one I like is the rat man from portal. What's good about him is that his story offers crucial details into the story of the world as a whole.

I know what your saying since most games don't do it that well. TLOU is the only game where I liked that sort of thing.
