I hate lore in all games. Why? Because it really isn't comprehensive. Not only that, but the way it's introduced is stupid. "hey, there's papers and books everywhere but for some reason the character is only interested in this absolutely irrelevant memo"

There are tons of games out there with comprehensive lore. Take the elder scrolls for example. I think it's stupid and poorly made, but they have lore for everything! Like you know how in the PC version you can open up the debug menu and enter commands? That's literally part of the lore.

Yeah it is stupid when you can't fully interact with your environment.

What do you guys feel about alternate worlds/timelines and retconing?

Personally I hate it 99% of the time. Far too often it's just added after the fact as a lazy way to expand the universe.

Completely depends on how it is done.
I love the idea sometimes, but I don't think it is usually done right.

Lore discussion for There Came an Echo!

I recently finished the game and it had some good stuff going on, so I'd like to talk about it. Hopefully this thread can get big as we discuss lore for new games we've played.

Super big end game spoilers of course, but it's not like you really care while playing.
Spoiler for There Came an Echo:
<br /><br />The game starts out with a scene right out of the matrix, only you play as the caller. This continues through the whole game, as both you and your strange side kick give everyone commands over the phone. They take early jabs at the matrix.<br /><br /><br />Turns out the world is actually just a simulation like in the matrix. However instead of it being a modern event from evil machines, the matrix in There Came an Echo was built billions of years ago by aliens in a quest to create sentient artificial intelligence. The simulation processed every single atom in our existence and calculated how everything changed over time. Eventually humans evolve and true computer sentience is created.<br /><br />Then as humans a group of them in the game create their own simulation with similar goals. From this simulation, they create a body and physically create a human from nothing.<br /><br />This signals the arrival of the posthuman state, as humans no longer need to live in their bodies or something. However it also causes the aliens to shut down the human simulation, since a simulation running within a simulation for some reason takes way too much power. Then the humans in the game convince them otherwise.<br />

IDK. The lore has a lot of potential, but also really doesn't explain itself.

Got caught up with homework. Next week is spring break though, so hopefully work doesn't overwhelm me, and I can get it done.

Halo lore is a pretty good example that lore complexity and lore depth are two different things. Most of it feels stitched together and artificial.

Like for example practically everything about the flood lol.

If you don't know, the flood are actually super gods of the Halo universe. They're the same things as the precursors, the supreme beings that created humans and everything else. What happened was the precursors created a species called the forerunners, and the forerunners rebelled against their makers. Precursors were all like "how dare they, this doesn't compute!" so the precursors just disappeared and acted like the forerunners defeated them. Some precursors were like "even though we live forever, let's turn into a powdery dust only to be revived in the distant future." So they became a powdery dust, and rage or something like that corrupted their dust.

Then humans much much later on find spaceships and the dust on board. They feed the dust to their dog like pets, cause it just makes them so cute! Soon these pets are super popular and every one has them. Even the prophets have them. So cute! Humans just keep searching for the dust and feeding it to them for cuteness overload.

However without warning some of these pets start having non cute growths, and the dog like creatures eat the growths off each other! Pretty soon the pets have tentacles and all that jazz. Oops! Apparently humans like eating them, cause the disease spreads to people.  It's too late, the flood has been created.

So a huge war breaks out between the flood and the humans. What you need to understand though, is that the precursors are literal gods. Their dust that made the flood is still them, and the flood is still a precursor. The flood thinks and is super smart and likes the humans. But for reasons, it's killing a lot of them. Humans eventually mutate the flood and infect their own soldiers with the flood so that it's flood fighting flood. This works and the flood gets practically destroyed. However the flood is not actually in any danger, for they have been orchestrating this all along! They retreat on purpose, as a clever ruse.

The forerunners use this opportunity to finish off the weak humans and kill them. However instead of killing them completely, they strip them of all technology and imprint Spartan designs into their blood. Then they're shipped off to a planet to restart evolution. Then the flood comes back and is all like "suck it forerunners, we hate you!" and it starts destroying them and essentially getting revenge for the forerunners revolt.

Weren't the Halo rings made by the Forerunners to destroy the flood by destroying all life in the universe, thus causing them to starve to death?

The rings were made to destroy all life, including the forerunners themselves. Basically it was their way of going out with a bang.

You sure?  My hardcore Halo story friend told me that the flood was gonna destroy everything so the Forerunners needed to to exhaust the flood's food supply (All Life).

Splatoon Lore
Spoiler for Hidden:
So Splatoon has very dark lore where it takes place 10k years into the future. Octarians and Squids have been fighting for resources through turf wars where the Octarians usually won but the keypoint with the Inklings winning since the Octarians forgot to plug in a switch for one of their main weapons. Now humans went extinct through pollution 10k years ago and Judd was in a frozen chamber for thousands of years to become immortal and help judge turf wars. He also help lead the Inklings into battle. At the end of the story after you save the great Zapfish you can wait a few minutes and start to hear pain and suffering. It is believed you just started a Octarian genocide and destroyed their empire.
