Naughty Dog is better than that? The original Uncharted was a straight up clone to the Tomb Raider franchise to begin with and there were no real changes to Uncharted made by Naughty Dog in the two sequels for PS3. The biggest changes came when Sony Bend got their hands on the Vita game. Though those changes were mostly made to take advantage of the Vita's features.

Naughty Dog hasn't exactly written the book on gameplay innovation lately. What they've been known for in their last four games, including The Last of Us, was refining mostly old mechanics and putting them into highly polished games with emotional stories and compelling characters with a cinematic experience that beats most movies. It is better for them to take ideas from other games to improve the experience than to allow the games to remain, mechanically, exactly as they had been. If not, the only other option is to try new things that might not work.

If something Tomb Raider did was clearly good then of course they're going to use it. That is the franchise that inspired Uncharted in the first place and it's dang sure something I would do. Many of the best games ever made took ideas from others who just came out in order to make the game what it was. Tomb Raider and Uncharted are competitors. Are we not going to complain how Crystal Dynamics made the Tomb Raider franchise more grounded, its story better, and its characters more compelling after Uncharted was clearly doing it better?
That's actually the definition of innovation though :/.  Taking some existing idea and making it better. You're thinking of creation which hasn't been in gaming since the ps1 days.

The term innovation is thrown around so much. Listen to how often people use the term to mean "something new". So anymore when someone complains about a lack of innovation I just assume they're referring to not doing anything brand new. Without getting picky with the word use my point still stands. Naughty Dog hasn't been known for doing anything "new" when it comes to gameplay mechanics. As you pointed out, very few actually have. Yet for some reason we get people who complain about it when certain studios don't manage to do it and borrow existing ideas. That's why I think it's silly that we're pointing out a Tomb Raider clone using things found in Tomb Raider which used things found in other games.

I agree with you, though Naughty Dog was the first to incorporate moving world into gameplay.  The whole "set pieces".  I'll say though, what they've shown literally looks like them messing around.  I'll be really worried if that demo is actually from the game.
