Rumors of a PS6 portable:

QuoteIt can definitely run PS5 games, just not at the same resolution/FPS, mainly due to lower memory bandwidth.

Hard to estimate performance since it's using an unreleased GPU uarch, but I think it's somewhere between XSS and PS5..

No, it's a 15W SoC on 3nm.

People are kind of annoying - at the prospect of PS6 Portable being weaker than PS5.  "Why would I get a PS6 if it's weaker than PS5?"

kitler53

oi.   switch 2 is ~ps4 but it's getting at least some ps5-level ports by cutting back on resolutions/frames/asset quality.   a home console ps6 + a portable ps6 with ~ps5 states would be basically identical.

....also i get annoyed by the "this is a dumb product.  who would want a portable ps6 when steamdeck exists".    c'mon dude.   something like 200 million consoles are sold each gen and you can't figure out that maybe there is a market for people that don't want to be on steam?!?!?   hell, sony's portable remote player for ps5 has sold similar numbers as steam deck.  people need to stop pushing steam deck as some massive success when by any other standard it is a massive flop.

anyways, assuming all of these rumors are true i'll likely get the portable version before the home console version.   i hate my steam deck and it's already broken but i love the concept.   i trust sony to do a much better job and more importantly sony is where my digital library is.  i just can't imagine what sony would do with a home console ps6 that i'll feel the need to rush out and get.  i literally have no complaints about ps5 that can't be fixed with software.

Wait so like it's a ps6 and a ps6 portable/vita 2? Or is it actually affecting ps6 and its games? Like series x and s?

the rumor as i know it is:

ps6 will have 2 skus
1. a home console
2. a portable console

the portable console is basically xbox's "series S" but instead of just being a lower power console it will be a lower power console in a portable/handheld form factor.   so instead of chasing the nintendo switch it's chasing PC/Steamdeck.

don't try to build an analogy to psp/vita.   this is not trying to be a separate platform from ps6 with exclusives.   they want ps6 and ps6p to be different form factors of the same ecosystem.    so to answer your question: yes, i think ps6p will limit ps6 to likely not being a big increase in power vs the ps5.   likely most "gains" will come from a change in architecture so that pssr is fundamental to the systems.

As long as they don't have a requirement that games must support PS6 portable, that'd be great.

Vita with cross buy and cross save was awesome. Just your PS4, but on the go (for the few games that supported it). Throw in remote play for everything else and you've got a pretty great system.

yeah, I agree with not mandating support or parity.

steam deck has tons of games that don't work and honestly I don't care.  I just need Sony to have a better system in place for letting me know what is/isn't supported which they already have for their other systems.

the games I want to play portable are the ones that will likely work anyways.  cult of lamb.  pixel junk shooter. animal well.  these are the types of games that just feel better on handheld than on a TV.

Animal Well feels great everywhere! I played on PC but the sounds coming out of the duelsense were fun.

And yah Sony has certification so there really isn't a fear of a game saying it runs on the portable only to be broken.

kitler53

I enjoyed those games on a TV too but they would feel better on a handheld.

I repurchased pixel junk shooter on steam just so I could play it on steam deck.  there is something about 2D (especially too down) games that feel great in your hands.

QuoteThe only AMD handheld with AI upscaling anytime soon will be the Playstation handheld.

so we can expect the handheld to have 16GB of ram.
KeplerL2: Well duh, 16 GB of LPDDR5X is dirt cheap

We can also expect that machine to have 36CUs
KeplerL2: Nah, remember RDNA5 has way way way higher perf/CU.

KeplerL2: Handheld only has 1/3 the memory bandwidth of the PS5 (although more cache and improved memory compression), it's pretty obvious that a mode that cuts bandwidth in half is meant to simulate the handheld.

How much more cache? Do you know?
KeplerL2: 4MB L2 + 16MB MALL

Would they launch with this type of memory few years down the line still though?
KeplerL2: Yeah, LPDDR6 is too far away still

RDNA5 or RDNA6 though? Isn't this a spin off of the PS6 die?
KeplerL2: Both are a fork of gfx13 (RDNA5/UDNA/whatever AMD decides to call it)

how does it compare to PS5 GPU again (main bandwidth abuser)?
KeplerL2: PS5 and PS5 Pro are both 4MB L2 but with no MALL (Infinity Cache)

They shouldn't call it a PS6. Just have it called a PS5 portable or a PS portable.

i think ps6 and ps6 portable is the idea.

i think the naming is really important here.  people need to understand not to expect exclusives.

If they call it ps6 portable, then the ps6 can't have any exclusives either.

Ps5 portable would be a great way around that limitation but man would it be bad marketing.
