seeing this come up a lot already with respect to intergalactic.   i think it is largely motivated by racisms and sexism but even i have to admit that if you look at recent (and future) releases sony has had a lot of female leads and a lot of non-white leads.   take a look for yourself:

I don't know, some of these are the whitest protagonists I've ever seen.

And Stellar Blade has one of the womany-ist protagonists I've seen.  /jk

Do they have a lot of non white leads though? GoW, TLoU, retournal, horizon are all white leads. Something like ghost would be ridiculous of it was anything other than japanese. Spiderman, miles and wolverine are predetermined characters.

But I don't think it's sexist to have a preference whether you want a female or male lead protagonist.

I generally always prefer a male protagonist because I myself am a dude. And can identify more with a guy. Just like a lot of women would like to have a female lead for the same reason. I don't think either one is sexist.

I will admit I'm disappointed that naughty dogs next game, the Witcher 4, Ghost, are all female protagonist

I was excited to play as Ciri in Witcher 4, but not after that trailer. Hopefully the game is different but the trailer just presents her as a gender bent Geralt. What's the point of changing the protagonist if you don't change anything? Also I really hate when sequels change character designs.

I loved Abby in TLOU2. She was my favorite and I would be very happy with an Ellen Ripley like protagonist in Intergalactic, but instead I got a hint of marvel vibes from her. No!!!!!

i generally prefer to play as female leads.

i've never gotten the "this is me" idea some people do with video games.  even when the game has a character creator the thing is always it's own identity and i'm merely watching their story (even if i influence it).   so to that end i find females more interesting than men.

that said, i think your viewpoint is the more popular viewpoint.   ...and as the consumer for (AAA) video game is heavily biased towards men so fair or not it would make business sense for more male leads overall.

i dunno.   i'm a lefty.   i like diversity and not just as a politics things.   i want my shows/movies to not all be the same-ish thing.   for example: there was a time i liked marvel but i'm soo freaking tired of marvel these days and just want to see different types of movies get made.   disney made sooo many of these i'm not sure i'll ever enjoy another marvel movie again.

Nope. A white male is only a fraction of the population. They should not just be serving those demographics alone any more as a wide spectrum of people play games.

I do often prefer to choose playing as a male if you get to choose. But otherwise I don't care as long as the characters and stories work really well.

Am I the only one who doesn't really think about the naughtiness or race as long as the game is good? ::)

Thats an over simplification of the matter is it not?

The race of a character can sometime affect which culture you will explore in the game. In Mass Effect Andromeda rhyder was Latino right? But that didn't matter one bit as it didn't really affect anything.

In a game like assassin's Creed, the game is exploring a culture and the characters race thus matters, as it affects the view point of which you are exploring that culture. So in definitely makes sense to care about the origin and race of some characters in some games.

It doesn't have to do with thinking one race is better than the other or thinking equal rights shouldn't be given to people from different races/naughtiness. It's about what makes the game more appealing to each individual person.

Nope, in general this is me. It normally doesn't effect me as long as I love the story and gameplay

I literally couldn't care less unless the game involves liking dudes. Then it's way less engaging.

Although in Horizon I guess I felt more like a god controlling Aloy than Aloy herself, because I had plenty of fun trying to set her up with the sun king.

I think its fine if you have a preference of which gender to play however if you're not playing said game because of it then that's just ignorance.

Okay, but why does that matter? I think variation is good. If everything was based on the same culture it'd be more boring imo. I don't see how that matters for the character's gender though.
