historically speaking,...  was their any technology changes over that time period that SP could leverage for gameplay ideas?

I didn't play the first one so don't take my opinion for much but it looked very similar to GoT. 

I guess what I'm saying is it too early to start calling it a dlc expansion like ragnorok?

Nintendo could file a patent in a few years for "method of playing a game set in Japan" and Sony would be screwed. Might as well add pokemon now and speed things up.
