Pi normally makes these, I'll try my best.

34 million gamepass members including gold gamepass core.

Gaming revenue up slightly only thanks to Activision. Without them things would be down.

Hardware revenue down by 42% from last year, that's disastrous.

not to say "i told you so" but Pi and I have been telling you all year that hardware crashed hard this year for MS.    from what I've seen hardware is at ~1.6 million for the first half of 2024.

I've never denied that it crashed so yeah not really an "I told you so"  ::)

Really doubt they'll have a new xbox ready for 2026, let alone for 2025. How will series s/x make it that far.

true, but you seemed surprised when we were talking about it previously.

as far as hardware goes,.. seemingly ps5 will have a pro-version this holiday and xbox is not going to have a pro-version this generation.  "X is our pro version".   series X|S will be likely not even make it to 5 mil this year and i can't think of any reason it won't be down even further in 2025.    all of this likely means more games launch on ps5 and that likely means even fewer people buy an X|S.

...i've heard a lot of people on era say something alone the lines of "i'm going to ride out xbox because i have one but next gen i'm moving to PC".   with MS already fully committed to PC and playstion trending that direction it is a very sensible stance.    i think if xbox had and honest conversation with itself about the future of xbox they'd come to the conclusion it makes no sense to release another console.   don't drop X|S just to keep existing gamers happy but go full 3rd party next gen.   what i really worry about is playstation following suit just a generation behind.   they are putting too many games on PC.   it's getting difficult to justify it's existence.

I don't understand why these companies seem so happy to give up their 30% cut. They make so much money from being stores.

Put Steam on Xbox and I'd be in heaven. I play a lot of games on PC but nothing beats a dedicated games console. Without that though, yeah I'm not gonna buy the followup to series x. This gen would have sucked if I didn't go into it with such a large backlog from skipping xbox one.

nor i.

i can totally understand sony wanting a piece of that sweet sweet PC money.   what i really don't understand is why they are taking the tactic of putting everything on a competitive platform.   why aren't they extended the PS store to PC.
1. they'd get 30% of any PC games sold
2. they'd retain their 30% on 1st part games ported to PC
3. with cross buy in place they'd not piss off any of their existing console owners with day-1 PC releases.

i know steam is suppose to be the crazy awesome store that no one can compete with but i call BS on that.   firstly,.. steam has like 80 employees total.   clearly it doesn't take much effort to run steam.  secondly,.. i've used the steam store and i have to say it's pretty shame to find a game.   it's exactly like the mobile stores where they push you into a top 20 list and everything after that is impossible to find.   imo every single games store has a lot of room for improvement.

It is baffling to me that no one seems to be able to get a store up properly.

So many of the other stores have taken years to get basic features like shopping carts, and steam has tons of developer APIs and they're backing Proton and tons of community features.

The gap is absurd.

but do you think PS couldn't compete with a reasonable amount of effort?   i mean,.. they already have a web based marketplace with shopping lists and favorites ect.   they already support multiple platforms (ps4, ps5, ps vita, psvr) so it couldn't possibly be difficult to throw PC into the mix.

all they are really missing is the PC downloader/launcher afaik.   they'd need to really hit that out of the park to be taken seriously but i can't imagine that what steam has is insurmountable.

will steam people all flock to ps?   hell no.   but there is a new generation of gamers born daily to appeal to.   ...and there is a huge number of console gamers with existing ps libraries that seems to be migrating to PC that sony could retain.   and if it was the only store to get their PC releases (at least day-1) i think plenty of steam users would dabble in it.   the amount of port whining they do is deafening.  clearly they want to buy sony's first party games.   i don't think an alternative store front is an insurmountable task for most PC gamers.

Steam players are fanboys like everyone else. Just look at how people reacted to Helldivers linking with PSN.

Microsoft had all those software features yet they still gave up. Their pc store is really just a gamepass launcher nowadays. PC is a losing play unless you want to go 3rd party imo.

I don't know what it's doing behind the scenes but it gets the job done. I don't remember ever having issues with it.
