Quote from: Legend on Jun 10, 2024, 01:06 AMWinter Burrow's inclusion was a bit odd. It's a nice looking simple indie game but it was the only small/indie game in the entire show. Kinda weird that they couldn't fit any more yet still found time for it, but I guess an exclusivity deal could be the reason.
makes sense.

nothing of value lost imo.  looked bad imo.

Reading impressions online, I think Microsoft aced this. They managed to make fanboys believe in them again, and they did that with Gears being their only new reveal. Almost everything at this showcase should be out within a year.

Spencer committing to more multiplat.

Can't figure out how to hone this the the right spot so i guess just go to era for the right clip.  10:02:00 is the start of it.

Horizon

Thought it was a really good show with Fable, Perfect Dark and South of Midnight standing out to me.

It was easily the best show this year but that is because Sony didn't have one and SGF was very light on big stuff. Ubisoft might match it.

I have noticed Xbox's trailers in comparison just do not generate anywhere near the volume of views that Playstation does. There must be such apathy amongst the brand for casuals they just do not bother. I am trying to think of the last Xbox trailer to get 5m views and the only one I can think of Forza Horizon 5. They really have a mindshare problem that won't be fixed till their biggest games like Fable deliver. I don't think Indy and Avowed will change much this fall.

Sony spent years building their mind share with games. All Phil has done is give empty promises. But when it comes to actual games people want and think are high quality, Sony has been delivering since the PS3 days. It didn't work much at first, they were still being outsold by Xbox first party games.

Even early PS4 games didn't sell as much. But eventually with Horizon and Uncharted 4, they had established a strong mind share with gamers, and their games have continued to sell more and more since.

it was clearly the best "show".    ...that's what spending 76 billion dollars (or whatever) on acquiring ~1/3 of the industry will do for you.  they bought one of the biggest 3rd party publishers in the world and combined it with a pretty big publisher and their existing 1st party and another 5-10 individual studio acquisitions.    MS must have at least 10x the employees making games as sony or nintendo.   if MS didn't have the best show it would be quite the failure.

i did notice that MS's best performing trailer (doom) is also the only one featured on the playstation youtube channel.    me thinks these are related.    MS can't seem to generate hype on their own.

...and to be honest do any of you really think MS's showing was all that great?    it was very much a 3rd party show imo.   decent games but everything was very mid.   graphically nothing special.   most look worse than games already out on ps like spiderman 2 or horizon FW.   very "safe" gameplay.   it's a collection of what will likely be decent games but also most of them will be completely forgotten about days after release like hellblade was.   nothing truly special.  nothing that's a real system seller or will change the mindshare of people thinking MS's releases are mid.

i know sony's show wasn't the greatest but i will say this:   sony showed 3 titles (astro, concord, lego horizon) and all 3 of them ship this year.    MS showed 12 1st party titles,.. 5 where dlc expansions, of the 7 games only 1 ships this year and there is already discussion on if gears of war even ships this generation...

...sorry MS but i can't get excited by these too early announcements.

It's kind of hard to come up with an exact number.

MS + Activision + Zenimax have around 20,000 people, but not all of those are developers. A large chunk of those are working on CoD.

PlayStation apparently has around 4,000. But I'm not sure if that includes their support teams that frequently get ignored.

On the scale of 4-5x larger than Sony/Nintendo.

They showed a lot of interesting things, but I also feel like none of it was as inspiring as something like God of War (2018), or Horizon or Astro Bot.

I think Fable and Gears look the most impressive. Tbh I find their XGS far more interesting and exciting than Bethesda sans BGS and ABK.

As for generating excitement Xbox has 5.4m youtube subscribers whilst PS has 15.6m. A more international brand certainly helps but it seems even in their home market of North America PS titles just resonate far more with players than Xbox's big games.

I still remember Horizon Zero Dawn's showing in 2015. It felt so exciting and fresh despite the leaks. You're right Sony had some majors beats last gen with Horizon, God of War, Spider-man and Ghost of Tsushima reveals.

Not sure how you got your numbers or what counts as first party nowadays, but I see Avowed, COD, and Indiana Jones all shipping this year.

Doom and Fable are 2025.

Perfect Dark and State of Decay 3 still have no dates which is pretty bad. Both were revealed 4 years ago.

No clue why people are thinking Gears will be next gen. It's just gears, it should be out by the end of 2026 unless they're trying to reinvent things.

i counted CoD.  i missed Avowed and Indy i guess.

...and with the state of xbox hardware many are predicting xbox will try to get an early start on next gen.   many think 2026 for the next xbox could happen.   if you watch the gears trailer it doesn't list any platforms,.. not even series XS.   just says "xbox" at the end which is fueling the speculation that the title won't be ready for current gen.

Yeah it's odd that Avowed and Indy are this year yet they aren't really pushing them as imminent releases. I guess it's just the new trend of not announcing specific release dates until the last minute.

Gears is not going to be a next gen exclusive lol. Yeah I could see Microsoft starting next gen early since they literally announced the next gen yesterday, but that'd just make Gears a cross gen title.

If the omission is a sign of something, it's that series s is getting dropped. EDT: the blog post also lacks platforms, yeah I bet series s won't be mandatory in the near future.
