you guys are making too much of this.  both MS and Sony have raised the prices of the OG consoles in every territory except America.

compared to when the consoles shipped cumulative inflation is like 30%.   sucks to see prices increase but compared to milk this is a very, very modest price increase.

at least this price increase is tethered to a new model that has a new feature (option to add a disc drive) unlike the other territories that got a price increase for the exact same thing.

True, I guess making the console "cheaper" to produce wasn't enough to negate inflation.

i think what i'm saying is relative to ps5's day-1 release this console probably isn't actually cheaper to make.   it's probably cheaper than continuing to make the older version of the ps5 but the price of silicon has gone up quite a bit since ps5's day-1 release.    we are accustom to electronic things getting cheaper to make over time but that hasn't been true these last couple of years due to inflation.

..and feel free to complain i guess.  i'm not trying to stop anyone from complaining.   but don't make it out to be just a sony thing,.. everything everywhere has gone up in price lately.

The price of a chicken sandwich is too dang high!

That's what this thread is about right?  :)

I get you. That's why I put the word cheaper in quotation marks. It's being made more cheaply but inflation hasn't made it cheaper.
And I guess Sony are the first to release a slim version of their console in this climate so it stands out more being more expensive. I just can't remember a time.when a slimmed down version released more expensive that the originals launch RRP.

Thinking about it, it seems a little weird to me.

People are definitely upset about the price of food going up, but it almost seems like for some people that they're more upset about a console going up in price, even though the former is more important.

(This is admittingly a very uninformed take. I haven't seen the exact same people talk about inflation for food prices vs consoles, and I'm sure people are generally more upset about the former. But I don't see as any people going "Lays needs to be punished for raising chip prices", whereas I have seen people say that about Sony. That's probably mostly because food is a wider range of things that are seeing inflation, whereas a console is a single thing that can be directed at. But still, it feels a little incongruent.)

kitler53

because, afaik, there are no "potato chip wars" like there are "console wars".

...also because it's sony.   both sony and MS raised their prices for subs this year.  only sony generated anger.

That's not how I look at it. I'm looking at it as a consumer and the value proposition Sony is offering me

The regular PS5 digital is cheaper, and will likely a discount come the holidays to push the old models out.

The PS5 slim is smaller, which is something that's very important to me now, it's not a preference,  portability of a console is important to me for reasons I won't get into now. And the PS5 slim has more memory

I'm contemplating going digital, since that's how I mostly buy games now, and again, it's smaller. But if the price difference between the digital and regular SKU isn't big I'd go regular.

So now I have a choice between 4 SKUs. But Sony is basically making me chose between a lower price older model vs smaller design and extra memory. And as a consumer, it's annoying. Specially when slim models usually offer a similar or cheaper price, smaller design and more memory.

I just check the inflation calculator and $500 in 2020 in ~$600 now. So the high inflation has wiped out the chance of getting a cheaper slim model.

you can look at it whatever way you want to but take a hot second to think about it from Sony's perspective.

in 2019 Sony released the PS5 at $400/$500.  every console was sold at a loss.  yes they planned to take a loss because that's how consoles have always been sold and what customers are used to.

..but a few months later the pandemic hit and inflation kicked in.  instead of costs coming down like they always have before costs went up and whatever loss Sony planned to take got bigger not smaller.

I doubt this can be proved but I'll bet even at $450/$500 these slim ps5s are still sold at a loss.  not a massive loss like with PS3 but this it's a profitable price point for Sony.

like it or not,.. keeping the $500 price point the same is effectively a price drop in a world where everything got more expensive.

...and if you want the old sku better buy one fast.  they will be gone shortly.

It would be interesting to see if Sony is still making a loss on each console and how much both inflation and demand had a say in price. I'm willing to guess both had a impact on the slim's retail price but inflation being the bigger factor.

Either way, I'm not not having a go at Sony and ignoring what MS are doing. It's crazy to me that a slim console releasing at a higher price, I've never seen that before regardless of the climate. This forum isn't Era or VGC so we can say that without bringing up what the xbox fanboys are saying or what MS have done.

But yes, inflation has iced everything up.

I don't care about MS. Their offerings don't interest me at all

But as a consumer Sony has made buying a PS5 a difficult decision.

Also the fact that I need to buy a stand for both vertical and horizontal use is ridiculous. A slim should improve design, not make it worse

The horizontal stand comes with PS5 but the vertical stand is $30

My point is I need to buy a new stand for the slim if I want to change how I set it up, which is ridiculous IMO. When you think about it the whole point it the slim (for consumers) is to have something smaller and easier to set up, making it need two stands and excluding one is stupid
