In a realistic game like The Last of Us, would you like to randomly slip while climbing?

Obviously the entire game would need to be designed around this to not make it horrible.

Death Stranding somehow made tripping fun, so why couldn't falling be fun?

I've already played Uncharted 2.

Did it though?

Yes. Death Stranding was a bit long but it's one of my favorite games, primarily because of the gameplay. There's a reason it won the most GOTY awards for 2019.

Uncharted 2 was scripted, same with all the falling through floors in Uncharted 3. Players don't have any fear since it's what they're supposed to do, while if falling was realistic then they'd plan their climbing routes accordingly.

It was also kind of a controversial win. It seems like for every one that loved, there was especially someone who didn't.

I was just teasing about that.

Real answer though. Astro's Playroom has some cool climbing sections where you can fall and die. Although, it's not that intense.

There are some VR games that center around climbing, but I doubt that they make it an intense experience.

Yeah I don't really know of the proper way to handle it, but it's kinda lame that almost all climbing is so uninteresting. Horizon Forbidden West did a big rework to improve their climbing, and it's better, but it's still risk free.

So many games are copying zelda's stamina mechanic but I wanna see devs try other things too. Astro bot is a good example in minigame form.

Have you played Call of the Mountain yet? Guess it's slightly off topic but how's its climbing?

$550 is steep.
Oh that sucks. You're the biggest fan of VR here!

Guess we can both hope it's selling horribly and gets a price cut  8)

the fact that you "don't really know of the proper way to handle it" pretty much sums it up.

plenty of games have a falling mechanic in them.  all of the tomb raiders post reboot have them.  it's a quick time event.  it's annoying AF and no one likes it.

have you ever climbed?

if you want to make climbing "realistic" you don't add in a falling mechanic.   you make it more of a puzzle game.   plotting your route and executing hand/foot switches to be able to reach the next hand hold is the interesting part of climbing.

...but that would be too involved of a mechanic for the adventure games that typically feature climbing sections as palette cleansers between action scenes.

Pre death stranding I definitely wouldn't have thought a game with tripping could be fun.

Yeah I've climbed and that's exactly what I'm referring to. Give players a reason to plan their route instead of just pushing forward. Planning routes in Death Stranding is a big part of the fun.

Definitely wouldn't expect games to be as involved as you're describing. I just want to see a game where the player feels tension when jumping gaps and grabbing ledges.
