ive always though that, Even though a company is made up of lots of people, its still a single company.  if you are refering to the people at the company, you use are, but if your refering to the company its is.

Sony IS making a new game
The guys at sony ARE making a new game.

Samsung and Sony ARE making a new product together

Plurality is not based off the meaning of nouns or their association to multiple objects, but rather the quantity of the word itself. Thus crows are evil, while a murder of crows is evil. However that doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong for people in the UK to say "are." Languages constantly evolve and with time the incorrect usage becomes the correct usage.

I consider corporations as a single entity.

So I use "is"

Nintendo "is" fudgy up on online capabilities.

Sony "is" giving terrible support to the Vita.

Microsoft "is" fudgy up overall.

Sony is making a game.
