Is it just me or do open world games suck?

The concept of an open world is great, but far too often they're just great examples of bad game design.

I'd describe most open world games as really just open world level select menus. You just move around the world to find what you're going to do next, but once you find out the next task it becomes pretty linear. Example being the missions in gta. The missions could just as easily work in a non open world version of the game.

The alternative, open world gameplay that uses the open world, are usually nothing more than fetch quests. Skyrim is horrible with these. Travel to point a. Do something that takes two seconds. Then travel to point b. Etc This type of gameplay is only possible in open world games, but it's just so boring. I mean most games have quick travel options since they know walking from one end of the map to the other sucks. This then makes the player aware that the game is just waisting their time with fetch quests. It sucks.

There are tons of good things only possible in open world games, yet why are almost all open world games ignoring them and just doing what sucks?

an open world game done well, you can have jsut as much fun outside a mission/level as in one.  Like gta, you can have a blast stealing cars, joy riding, driving up the mountains, going on 5 star chases etc..  or dying light you can spend hours just leveling, parkour, and killing shame lol

but some games its really just crud.. *cough* watchdogs *cough*

Depends on what type of Open World you are talking about. If you are talking about sandbox like GTA then yeah, you hit that one on the head, but if you are talking about Open World JRPGs like the old final fantasy games, you've got yourself some nice open world.

Zelda Open World is also in a class of it's own. Zelda 1 had a perfect open world system.

Yeah sanbox is what most games do great at. They set up the world, and you just mess around with that.

RPGs are great, but they're great because of the rpg part imo. Never played a zelda game in my life, but strangly 2D open world games are great. Like pokemon. It's only 3D ones that suck.

Well then...

Zelda 1 has a system that you are set on a quest right when you start up the game. You go to whatever place you want and do anything you want. You weren't told what to do, so you would just stumble on the dungeons. There's nothing but your own skill holding you back from the final dungeon.

i also hate open world games.  i like my games to have a point and objective.  no objective no fun.

Nah it's just you lol. It's not the open world that is the problem, it's the bad game design

I enjoy the walking around most of the time.  Yes it does suck when you want to do something.

I agree with some parts of it.

I know right. It's weird knowing the games Legend has never played.

Usually in open world games, because the dev has to focus so much on trying to create a big open world, the actual story/missions take a step back and they don't tend to focus on them as much so they end up being boring/repetitive.
Legend made me remove this. Everybody riot.

I agree with you on this one. I like having a set objective to work towards, if I don't I get bored super quickly. The best example of this is when I'm playing Minecraft, I always get bored really quickly because I find no fun in just playing around doing nothing. That being said, I enjoy the sandbox in GTA V, they really nailed it with that game. Still, while my friends have fun just messing around and shooting stuff for ages I usually get bored along the way.Open World sandboxes aren't really my kind of thing but a game with lots of quests and objectives I can get behind, as long as the quests are fun.

Making a good open world game is tricky :D

Shut up and get ready for The Witcher 3.

Dont hate them, think they've run their course and is overhyped now.
