Best FF? You are kidding me lol.

But no the reason why I didnt post it is because I finished FFVIII back in 2004 or 2005 and I didnt start reviewing/making scores till 2010.

I have the Steam version of FFVIII and I plan to score that :P.

Anyways - FFVIII's Story, Characters and Music were all great but the gameplay was horrible.

FFVIII for the PSX is the same as FFV is for the SNES - worst in the trilogy of a generation. But that isnt saying the game is completely garbage as I've said the above aspects are good.

The gameplay system however was garbage imo - especially the leveling up and the stat system. The fact that you have to make 2 characters high lv and have a low priority lv character due to the fact that the enemy level rounds up and averages to the overall party level is really annoying and much more of a grind than actual grinding in dungeon crawlers. The fact that they have a "De-Level Up" ability speaks volumes for that.

Also the game is so anti-magic - you cant use the best spells to attack enemies but have to equip them to increase your stats - if you use the equipped spells your stats get lower.

Also you cant grind for cash but you gotta do tests to get a higher rank in SeeD in order to get more monies randomly? wat.

Also the combat is dang slow as hell - just like Final Fantasy V's combat speed which was horrid slow.

For a person who loves difficulty I guess its fine for them but for me I want to enjoy the gameplay in its core and enjoy the story, music and atmosphere - thats why I play RPGs. The gameplay is essential but FFVIII's mechanics do not help it lol.

Anyways if I was to give a guess of what score I would give FFVIII it would probably be in the lower 80s rather than anything less - the game is GOOD but not great or bad.

P.S. Kryta-Kun - I would put FFXIII above FFVIII in my favorites for the FF series :P
I'm not joking Final Fantasy 8 is my favourite one.  Best stat system, best strategy, best world.  Not my fault you suck at it :P.

Favorite doesnt mean best though ;(

Nuuu I dont suck at it bish ;(

Although I have to say.....I did make the mistake of making all 3 characters high lv so I was playing Super HARD mode in the 2nd half of the game until I realized it....XD. I'm amazed I made it to the end like that lol.

I can break the game down objectively and it will be near the top.  Reason being?  Only one FF game has better strategy.  No game has a better "level"system.  No FF game has as many little things in each town (side stories) as FF 8 does.  The rest like story/art is preference and even then I can make a case for the art.  Besides only FF 8 has Zell in it /discussion.

If I remember right, FFIX has side stories too infact similar to Tales Of series skits too which is a great feature o.O

Anyways, as for the level system - I'm not a big fan of it :x.

Again like I said the level scaling and the slow dog gameplay is something I dislike ;x.

Also Tifa and Sabin > Zell ;(

Like I said, there is no world in Final Fantasy games (Maybe the online ones since they have to be) that has the side stories that FF 8 has.  Note, I say side stories not side quests.  Like, for instance, I managed to find the lunch lady's son in Fisherman's Horizon.  After finding him, I convinced him to go back to the garden.  Now every time I go into Balamb Garden he's in the back.  There's also quite a bit more.  Final Fantasy 9's "side story" were story character focused (Quina, Gilgamesh) and most of them were part of the main story anyways.  The overall world was pretty lifeless in 9 though there was a lot of sidequests, I won't disagree there.

The level system and level scaling is what makes Final Fantasy 8 top notch.  Low level, high stats is how the game is supposed to be played.  Plus with such a deep stat/refine/junction system, there's huge customization that  FF game has (and from 1,3-7,9 have been the same).  You can actually get Blizzaga even before fighting Ifrit if you play cards and learn the right refinements.  Like I said, not my fault you suck at the game :P.

Tifa's a baby plain and simple.  Let Cloud walk around for an entire CD thinking he was Zack, like really?  You stupid hoe.  Plus Zell's limit break gives him way more attacks that Tifa wishes she had.  Sabin was pretty sick, but Sabin's no Zell.  Zell's a joker.  Poor guy, always trying to shake someone's hand and no one ever does :(

Get your ears ready for one atrocious butchering of the OST.

@OP: The departure of Nomura probably won't be felt. The game is probably very far in production and most of the core elements of the game completed. The new director's job will more than likely rely on making sure everything gets done in time and has nothing to do with the design elements of the game.

Shame that they didnt update the OST sound files for the Steam version of FFVIII yet :(. Maybe they will in a few months kinda like what they did with the Steam version of FFVII.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I just read that the new director claims the game is 50 to 60% complete. At that point I don't think that Tabata could do much to screw the game up unless he started changing what has already been set in place when Nomura was in charge. Even if he did alter some things, I would rather it be Tabata doing it than Toriyama. Last thing Final Fantasy needs is him being in charge of another game where he concerns himself more with making the main character's two natural pines bigger than anything else.

They did, its not using the original PC format that the original PC port was using.

Quotea recent update has apparently put that right. A post on the Steam forums states that the latest patch has changed the audio to the "sweet sweet sounds" of the PS1 version.

50-60% after 8 years is...less than I was expecting. Releasing in 2022 then?

The new director mentioned that the 50-60% is counted from when they started development on the PS4. So they're moving at a much faster pace than when it was a PS3 project.

"At the moment, it feels like it's at around 50 - 60%."
