This is the first time this has happened in the history of space. The astronaut is returning home early.

what's the emergency?

i'm assuming it takes days to weeks to months to get an "emergency" ride off of a space station. any true medical emergency would need to be handled in space or they'd just be dead.

Nasa will not say because it is related to the astronaut themselves, not an issue caused by a failure of some kind in space.

So nasa will not even say which astronaut because medical history is private.

All we know is that they do not have the equipment on board to address it, and nasa is bringing the crew home early.

The crew considered immidiate evacuation, but now the astronaut is considered stable.

well i hope things turn out all right.

i'm certain NASA cannot plan for every possible medical need while in space with a limited number of people.  you can't have a surgeon in the wings and even if you could surgery might not go well in low G environments.   ...but i'm also certain they gave some thought to what is possible to meet as many of the most common maladies a human might encounter.
