putting horizon FW on ps+ just 1 year after release was a mistake.

I think a lot of it feeling disappointing sales wise is that the first one did so well that a sequel was almost assuredly not gonna be as surprising in sales figures

Yotei sold 3.3 million. https://www.gematsu.com/2025/11/ps5-shipments-top-84-2-million-ghost-of-yotei-sales-top-3-3-million

I worry it and ragnarok and forbidden west all did worse than their ps4 counterparts. Sony had a huge success with astrobot but otherwise this gen has been pretty "plateaued" right? Am I missing some game?

Aren't they more expensive though?

If the average price is higher, than selling less doesn't mean less of a success.

I think once the price drops it will continue to sell.

What's the time frame on this btw? 3.3 million in how long?

Yeah might make slightly more income, idk. My key point is that I believe they haven't grown.

32 days for the 3.3 million.

Ragnarok - 15 million in 1 year
GoW - 10 million in 13 months.

Ragnarok was bigger.

I think it's hard to achieve growth with sequels. Especially for Horizon, when you kind of need to play the game that comes before.

The stuff that seems to escape that is when you repeatedly have extremely high rated stuff like God of War. I don't think Horizon or Yotei are on that level.

Exciting new IPs.

High rated franchises where the story doesn't really matter (Dark Souls).

Games where the overarching story also isn't really what's important like Elder Scrolls. You don't need to play Oblivion to understand Skyrim, whereas Horizon 2 continues Aloy's story.

A lot of people jump in on sequels they didn't play the first game of.

Uncharted 4 is a big example.

Didn't spiderman 2 sell faster than spiderman 1?

Also ghost doesn't follow the same story

according to gemini:

host of Tsushima sold 2.4 million copies in its first three days after launching exclusively on PlayStation 4 on July 17, 2020. This made it the fastest-selling new PlayStation intellectual property of that generation at the time. The game continued to sell well, reaching 5 million copies in under four months and over 13 million total copies sold as of September 2024, including its PC and PS5 Director's Cut versions.

sounds on par to me.  if this goes on to sell 13+ million i don't know why you'd complain about that.   is 20 million now required to be a success?!?  god i hope not.

I wasn't intending on including Yotei, I was more talking about Horizon there when it comes to sequels.
I don't think Ghost of Yotei was highly received in the same way that God of War/God of War Ragnarok was.

Spider-Man 2 was highly received (though probably bolstered by being a huge IP). Probably mostly just being a huge IP of a good franchise.

I also feel like it has to make it harder to generate excitement for a franchise, when it takes 5+ years to get a sequel...

I agree with banman. Sequels, at least in the past, normally sold more. Hence why they kept being made vs new ip.

I'd complain if I was Sony with high expectations.

My point is that ps4 was a huge huge upgrade for sony first party sales. Yet ps5 seems flat on a per studio level.

Which sequels? I feel like most of Sony's big successes last gen are from new IPs (Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, technically count Spider-Man).

Uncharted had a growing trend. And I think a lot of credit goes to being consistently high rated. Especially with 2 still being Sony's highest rated game.

God of War had a huge boost with the new 2018 game.
