I played DS2 quite late after thousands of hot takes about how bad it was reached my ears/eyes.

it was fine.

I really didn't think it was all that different from the rest. my only comment is all of the "areas" in the other games felt like they could coexist in the same universe. in DS2 everything felt like something from soft would make but some felt thematically like they didn't belong in the same game together.

It kind of takes me out a bit if I experience a bug that I can't find any reference to online.

If other people are having the issue, okay.

Playing Dark Souls 2, got through most of the level before dying.

Attempt 2 and suddenly there is a barrier that I spend a few minutes trying to go around.

Get the barrier open with a consumable. And I spend a couple more minutes looking around to see if I've gone crazy.

Wait ds2 faked stuff and made your first run easy?

I think a lot of the criticism about DS2 is very exaggerated.

But I think the game goes against a lot of how the other Souls games are designed.

I would say on some level, Dark Souls 2 is what people expect the Souls games to be like.

Most of the time in the Souls games, you are faster than the enemies, with a few exceptions. Everything tends to be spaced out. You're usually able to run past / away from enemies.

This is frequently not the case in DS2. It varies by level, but there are some areas that go out of their way to punish you for running past enemies, there are some where it's basically impossible - Iron Keep has a lot of those large metal turtle things that block an entire passage and fast knights.

Iframes are attached to a stat.

The game in general has quite a few quirks.

It's still very much a Souls game, but it feels rougher in a lot of ways.

To add on to what I was saying about Dark Souls 2 before.

Spoiler for Hidden:
Dark Souls 1 and 2 both have a level where you have these giant dumb dinosaur/dragony/demony things. DS2's is most of the way through one of the DLCs, and DS1's is a late game enemy.

In DS1, you can just avoid them. There's a way to attract them and they're annoying when that happens, but they don't generally go out of their way and it's pretty easy to just walk past them.

In DS2, they're annoying. They're aggressive, they chase you and jump on you, and shoot balls of energy at you.

Dark Souls 1 is a challenging game that feels smartly designed so that you only need to engage with what you want to and a few things where you need to. Dark Souls 2 feels like it goes out of its way to ensure that you engage with it, the way the devs want you to. You need to fight these specific enemies in this specific order - otherwise they'll chase you and crush you.

It's still a great game, but it's not as forgiving as the others.
Still playing Dark Souls 2. It's been a bit of a bizarre experience.
I am further in some ways, and not quite as far in others.

It was a little weird, because I was pretty sure that my last playthrough that I didn't get as far as I did. And yet when I was getting further I kept remembering places.

I'm also a little flabbergasted how quickly I got through the game on my first playthrough. I was assuming I was going through faster, because I was beating a lot of bosses on the first try and knew where to go. But I have more hours on my current save. (Which is glitched to be fair. I set the PS5 in rest mode, and came back to an extra 20 hours on my save file. That's only what I am aware of.)

Basically done with the main game minus like two bosses, still working on the DLC.
