I bought a laptop

Would be nice to be able to do game dev away from my desktop. Modern laptops are stronger than it so they can run all my stuff.

But how good do I go? Found a $900 one with an rtx 4060. Found a $2000 one with an rtx 4080. Found a few inbetween with an rtx 4070.

4070 has the same amount of video ram as a 4060 so that's a big bummer, but it's still a good upgrade.

The Acer Predator is the only one with an RTX 4080. Also has the best CPU and second best screen. Really heavy and has a poor battery life based off reviews, but I don't know how that compares to the others.

The ASUS ROG doesn't have a numpad on the right which could be a big negative. I'm sure used to one and I use those keys a lot. Also it has the worst cpu of this group, but still just a bit better than my current desktop. I love the screen and I love the weight though.

Asus TUF is pretty good. Fine cpu, great ram, but the worst screen of the group. Even a worse screen than the random ASUS TUF my dad bought recently.

Gigabyte is cheap and still great, just has an RTX 4060. Do I really need a top end laptop gpu anyway? I could save money and upgrade my desktop to an rtx 5000 series when those launch in a few months.

I also have the option of buying a laptop with only 16gb of RAM and upgrading it myself.

Asus Rog is out of the running. The OLED and clean form factor are incredibly tempting but the CPU and lack of num keys are way too much of a negative when it is that expensive.

Having a microcenter just a few minutes away is great. They had an amazing in store only deal so I'm getting an rtx 4080.

Was really hard to find a good laptop that was small. Why do all these gamers want huge screens!?

Sorry I had looked at this thread twice, and it's hard to give any kind of recommendations without any specific requirements.

It'd be easier to make a recommendation if you had a specific budget, and then find the best PC in that price range.

No problem.

Yeah budget was hard because I was all over the place. It was about finding the best laptop for me, not the best laptop at a specific price, and that's a lot harder.

Was extremely close to buying a $1,300 one but then some dumb review video from a few weeks ago mentioned that this laptop goes on sale for $1,100 and only at that price is it a great buy. Just knocked a lot of the joy off it.

I'm not going to share my specific model or do more research because I don't want something like that to happen again.  ::)

It's funny though how much stronger it is than my desktop. I built this guy 4 years ago and covid+crypto was bumping up prices so I put in a lot of temp parts that ended up being not so temporary. Oops.

Feels really nice. Man can the fans get loud during turbo mode but during other modes it's pretty silent. Dead silent as I type this, the clock gears in the other room are even louder.

RGB is so funny. This is the first pc product I've ever owned that is gamer tier. I think every single key can have an independent color and function like a 20p tv. I'll just disable everything.

Also I have a copilot button right there next to the arrow key. Guess my laptop is a 2024 model unless they changed that button with a microrefresh. (I really researched one pc and then at the last minute found this one at microcenter with 1 in stock. I bought it a bit quickly. Didn't even realize it had a 2 tb ssd instead of a 1 tb!)

Now to box it up for a few days since I want to treat it like a birthday present.  8)
