Pi keeps getting me to play old games which is great and I actually play 10+ year old games pretty frequently, but I don't think of myself as a retro gamer.

Don't know why. Maybe I'm just in denial  ::)

all the time.  my backlog is just 10+ years deep.

Great games have no time limit!

I also don't really think of 10+ years as being retro. I feel like it's more of a format change.

Older than PS1 vs PS1 vs PS2 has a different feel compared to more modern games. I don't feel like games have really changed substantially since the PS3 era and I don't really view it as retro.  PS1 feels fairly retro.

agreed and that may be part of the "lack of growth".  there are some missing QoL features in PS3 titles but for the most part they feel the same as modern titles.

especially Sony first party like uncharted were Soo graphically ahead of their time that on modern hardware with improved resolution and framerate they feel like brand new titles.

Yeah the animations in Horizon Forbidden West blew me away and feel like a generation ahead of every other rpg, but they're still just icing on the cake. The feel of the game doesn't really change.

I thought for sure this new gen would have brought new gameplay. Ico and Botw both felt like previews of where everything was headed with physically simulated worlds, but that hasn't happened.

I blame it on crossgen games.

probably right.  can't fully leverage new tech if you have to support legacy.

I also blame developers and publishers though.  on the dev side there is just too much focus on recreating real life.  oh sure ray traced reflections look pretty but if that's your "white whale" then your chasing the wrong thing.  on the pub side I'll bet big games aren't allowed to try for new ideas too much.  need that confidence a project will finish to even start.

maybe the true "next gen" will be AI.   an RPG that takes in conversational voice inputs would be pretty next level.
