Japanese Language Thread

I know we have the language thread, but I would like to make a dedicated Japanese language thread. A place to throw in grammar or vocabulary or whatever else.

So Japanese has a few different ways of conjugating verbs.

Short form present tense affirmative:
For い adjectives and for verbs, it is the dictionary form.
食べる
たつ。
あつい


For な adjectives or nounです, you replace です with だ。
きれいな => きれいだ。
かさです => かさだ。

For the negative present short forms:
る＝＞ない
たべる => たべない。

Non る (which can be misleading)=> あない
よむ=> よまない
わかる=> わからない

With the exception う, becomes　わない

Irregular verbs:
くる=>　こない
する=>　しない
ある =>　ない

い adjectives =>　くない

な adjectives or noun です => じゃない
いぬじゃない。

The polite form / ます

る verbs get dropped
食べる＝＞たべます。
起きる＝＞おきます。

う verbs become います。
きく＝＞ききます。
飲む＝＞飲みます

Some verbs that end with ru are actually u verbs, which is the more correct way to specify.
かえる＝＞かえります。
とる＝＞とります。


Negative forms
る　＝＞ません
う＝＞いません。

たべる＝＞たべません。
おきる＝＞おきません。
きく＝＞ききません。


Past tense:
Positive:
る＝＞ました。
う＝＞いました。
たべる＝＞たべました。
きく＝＞ききました


Negative:
る＝＞ませんでした。
う＝＞いませんでした。
おきませんでした。
ききませんでした。


And for nouns:
です
negative:
じゃないです。

Past tense:
でした
Past tense negative:
じゃなかったです。

て form:
For making requests
giving/asking for permissions
stating that something is forbidden
forming a sentence that describes two events

Ru class verbs:
る＝＞て

U class verbs come in various different categories:
う、つ、る＝＞って
む、ぶ、ぬ＝＞んで
く＝＞いて
With a notable exception: 行く＝＞いって
ぐ＝＞いで
す＝＞して

Irregular verbs conjugate as such:
する＝＞して
くる＝＞きて

This gets used as part of a request.
よむ　＝＞　読んでください。 (Please read)
おしえる　＝＞　教えてください。(Please teach me)

Can also ask someone permission by adding もいいですか:
見てもいいですか。 (May I see)

As well as prohibiting someone from doing something by adding はいけません.
しゃしんを撮ってはいけません。(You must not take a picture)
しゃしんを撮る  (To take a picture)
