Split from ps thread, I made this post after playing Lock in Dreams.

I need to stop screwing myself over with puzzle games :P

I hardly ever have patience with them because once I get the gist of things I feel the need to move on. Being stumped for more than a few minutes feels like a waste of time. I basically abandoned the game a few hours after that post and used hints from a guide to quickly finish it up.

In hindsight I really should have just saved this game for next week when I wasn't as stressed and busy.

Lol I understand. I rarely do that with puzzle games. I can spend hours trying to work it out before I'll give in because I hate myself when I get a hint or find the solution to a good puzzle.

Most of the time if I use hints, I use them early on so I can work out what mindset I need for the game. Once I know that, I'm a bit more stubborn on using hints.

I've only done it a few times but I've never enjoyed it after the fact. Stephen's Sausage Roll was another one I quit before the ending, only to realize it still had some cool tricks up its sleeves.

I'm bad with hints. I like being able to say I solved a game without any hints so once I've used one, the floodgate just kinda opens.

like.. genrally speaking i never use hints. i'll happily work on a puzzle for hours and never want to get a hint. the figuring it out is the fun of a puzzle game. playing it with a FAQ is worse than not playing it at all.

My expections are:
1. talos principle - this one was kind of not fair. this shame required me to leave the game and learn stuff waaaay outside the game's mechanics.

2. fez's black monolith. it took an entire commuity to solve this so i don't feel bad in the least.

You got the other two heart cubes on your own? That's crazy impressive.

not sure. maybe. probably not. I feel like with fez it was easy to not even notice a puzzle existed if you walked past it,.. especially the end game ones. but generally speaking I played pretty none-stop for a few months and filled at least 1 whole notebook with notes and didn't use any FAQs.

this is the one I googled because I just had to know.

I decided to play a different puzzle game on my backlog to redeem myself. Finished QUBE Directors cut in 2 hours and 6 minutes with most side puzzles, oh yeah.

Hidden/distorted puzzle completion sucks. Like if I just had a person tell me "keep playing, there are interesting puzzles remaining that I think you'll like" then I'd have kept playing without cheats or hints.

I played FEZ years after it released and I had heard about the black monolith and other community driven puzzles. Because of that I just assumed a lot of puzzles were not meant for me and I missed out on a lot of things like the language. Made up for it by translating Tunic's much harder language.

I spent hours and hours on that one before giving up. I'm going to correct myself because I may look up the solution more than I realise. I definitely looked up the solution for a few of the stars (maybe 5) only after spending tens of hours trying to mop up the stars that I missed to point I will no longer play the game so might as well find the solution.
But I have to get to that point first that I'm done with the game.

wow, really? you didn't solve the language?!?! i figured you of all people would have since it's like your thing.

yes, i solved the language in Fez on my own. took a long time and a lot of notebook pages but it was fun as hell to solve.

i got all of the stars on my own expect the one. i got the QR code and the hexidemal translation but didn't figure out (on my own) what to do with that date.

also soo much fun.

i suppose i should also say i googled the "impossible puzzle" from the witness. i had already "solved" it though. i was just looking for tips on how to improve my speed because i wasn't fast enough.

How did you solve it?

Spoiler for Hidden:
I know the game has the pangram with the brown fox and the alphabet cube. Did one of these give you a eureka moment, or did you solve it another way?

Maybe I'll try translating it using my Tunic method. I don't remember any of the letters.

I didn't find either the number cube or the rosetta stone.

I figured out the numbers pretty quick. They just made immediate sense to me by thinking of them as "roman numerals".

The alphebet was a slog but basically without any evidence i just assumed it was a substitution cypher because (to be frank) i don't know enough about cryptology to even consider anything else.

This is where i had a ton of notes in my notebook but generally speaking i started with the 1 letter words and "the" to figure out a few of the letters and after writing down enough examples i "wheel of fortuned" it. Does that make sense?

Yeah that makes sense. I actually replayed FEZ this morning and just finished solving the language in essentially the same way. That was fun!

I did not know that multiple letters were mapped to the same symbol and that really screwed me up. My whole process was breaking everything down to consonants and vowels which doesn't work at all for U/V!

I also screwed up and had A and I mixed up. Spent hours trying to make sense of things and made some progress based off repeating letters but finally had a breakthrough moment when I realized "Hi" was a much better solution than "Ha."

Started in a notebook but switched to my computer after making too many mistakes. Editing a letter in one place updates it everywhere so that saved a lot of time. Kind of fitting that "understand" was the first word I was able to "wheel of fortune" based off my guesses for smaller words.

kitler53

ah yes,. I remember now that repeating letters was a big help. also my first words of A I and "the" gave me a fair amount of two letter words with limited options.

anyways,.. it was hard at first and then it kind of all came together at once after getting like 15 letters figured out.

so I probably sound braggy about never going to guide to solve anything so I feel like mentioning...

I never finished the bridge. I "finished" the game but that was like only the midpoint of the game I guess. there was like a 2nd teir of puzzles for which I got stuck on one. as I refuse to go to the Internet for things I just deleted the game instead. kind of felt embarrassed about that one because it was far from the hardest puzzle game I've played but I was stuck.
