Supposedly the Sound of Freedom had been astroturfed.

I've seen a number of people claiming that they've seen an entire theater be reserved for the movie and no one shows up. They are surmising that churches are reserving seats and trying to give them away.

I did see a video where someone showed this, but there were some gaps. Like they showed a theater and showed that all the seats were reserved online. Reasonably possible that it wasn't the same theater.

People will always have funky experiences but it's just people trying to rationalize why a movie they dislike is doing well. Exact same thing happened with Captain Marvel. CEO of AMC strongly disputed it.

From a popularity standpoint for sure.

Rather curious that people are claiming that tickets are sold out.

No I mean this exact same thing happens. People claimed Captain Marvel tickets were being bought by Disney to fluff the numbers. They'd see seats were sold out online yet at the theater there'd be empty seats.

I figured that was the case.  ;D

It's funny that I haven't heard of stuff like this on the game side. A game dev could easily buy a bunch of bots to make their steam activity look better.

Silicon valley even had an episode about it.

Is something like this normal?

(Genuinely curious. Someone brought it up in the Era thread.)

First big hit to use something like that. People can donate to let more people watch it but if no one redeems a ticket, the money can skip the box office and go 100% into the studio. The movie has made $156 million so far at the box office yet there's no way to know how much extra money the studio is gonna make from donated tickets that go unclaimed.

I bet something like this becomes standard for most mid budget movies. Fans of Wes Anderson who have more money than sense could feel like they're pushing his movies to a wider audience, for example.

hopefully it has a really small budget.

edt: 100 million budget, gonna be hard to break even at the box office but maybe it'll be a crowd pleaser and pull it off.

Avatar Way of Water is biggest digital home release in Disney history, not too surprising.

Puts a lot of extra pressure on the game. The Avatar ip can't be milked since Cameron owns it, so every movie/spinoff needs to deliver.

Really interested to see what their Avatar expansion looks like at Disneyland. All they've confirmed is that it's an Avatar "experience."
