Quote from: Legend on Jul 19, 2023, 05:37 PMYeah they were the best a decade ago but for years they've been cannibalizing it to try and push people towards IMDB.

the-numbers.com is a good replacement.
Yeah I started to go to the numbers now. But it's a shame because BOM was awesome. And they just... Stopped....

the-pi-guy

I used to love boxofficemojo. They moved a lot of their stuff behind a paywall.

The numbers isn't quite as good, but I think they've made a lot of improvements since bom changed.

Quote from: BananaKing on Jul 18, 2023, 09:55 PMThe first. It started off okay, nothing great, but it wasn't too dumb. But the third act was just horrible. Why do action movies insist on including kids in fight scenes. Its annoying and dumb.  There is just a lot of dumb things in it. And at the times the acting was horrible
It's 100% an exec thing.  "If they have kids in there, you can then sell them toys".  I remember, either reading an interview, or watching an interview from Bruce Timm.  Warner execs went up to them and asked them to make a teen based Batman show.  I can't remember how he worded it, but essentially they wanted a high school Batman to sell toys to kids or something along those lines.  Timm and Dini were so mad at the execs for wanting them to dumb things down (Batman TAS and Superman TAS were pretty tame and all age friendly), they were going to walk.  Another producer was also told about wanting to do a teenage show and he got super excited, he was like "We can do this with this show, and that" so after seeing his enthusiasm Timm and Dini calmed down and were going to support him.  Show ended up being Batman Beyond, you know, probably the "darkest" and "adult" of the DCAU...  What I imagine WB wanted was something like X-men Evolution (Which is probably why it got made).  A high school X-men Evolution style Batman wasn't going to work... It's just that producers have way more sway in movies.  It also doesn't help that these execs are old and have dementia.  So things are getting increasingly made for pre-schoolers instead of being all ages (Family Friendly).  Like, they think the youngens today are all pre-schoolers.  Case in point; the new Ninja Turtles movie.  "They're teenagers, that's what teenagers are like", except I work with teenagers for a living, and no, that's not what teenagers are like.  The new turtles are aged betweened 6-8.  Which is fine and I'm sure the movie is going to be fine, but that's where movie exec's mentalities are.  They told producers to make a new Ninja Turtles movie and aim it for what they think are teenagers.  What they think are teenagers are pre-schoolers.  It also doesn't help current day writers just aren't good and you have this mess.

It's definitely a mess. And this is obsession with selling toys is really annoying. I really miss the days where directors really cared about their movies and every screen and shot in the movie had a meaning and was thought out.

We barely got 5 or 6 interesting movies a year now. Rarely do we get a 2 really good ones.

It's just a shame that the art of the movies is heading in this direction

I started The Flash last night.  Still have an hour to finish, but overall i'm liking it mostly.  Some silly dialogue at times and the CGI even outside of the flash's running is hit and miss.

I so wish that Ezra Miller didn't do the things he had been doing the past few years.  I actually like him well enough as the flash, but oh well.  I just hope when they do eventually recast its someone really good.

I hope that Gunn is able to turn around the DC universe, and that there's not anymore reboots.

It's probably just nostalgia, but I find the DC universe to be more interesting than the Marvel one.

For me personally
Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter are all up there with Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. But that's probably mostly because my dad would watch the Justice League show.

I liked suicide squad more than the suicide squad and disliked gotg2, but Gunn can be pretty great.

With Marvel sucking, I could see DC gaining some ground.

Have y'all seen the movie Promising Young Woman?

Great movie.

The kids have been watching Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. It's their current "kick".

They're kind of bad. The weirdest part about them has to be when the human people have weird issues with the Chipmunk people.

Like when a teenage boy tells chipmunks not to talk to a girl.

Super weird stuff.

How many of those movies did they end up making? I think I've only seen the first modern 2009 one.

Anyone watch The Godfather?

QuotePUZO: Yeah, I mean, it was a cinch because it was the first time I'd ever written a screenplay, so I didn't know what I was doing. You know, it's - and it came out right. And the story I tell is that after I had won two Academy Awards, you know, for the first two "Godfathers," I went out and bought a book on screenwriting because I figured I'd better learn...

GROSS: (Laughter).

PUZO: ...You know, what it's about because it was sort of off the top of my head. And then the first chapter - the book said, study "Godfather I." It's the model of a screenplay. So I was stuck with the book.

I got a kick out of this story.
