Nah it's still small potatoes compared to other things like pokemon or star wars.

Although it'll be interesting to see how the next Mario game does. Odyssey was big but it has a lot of room to grow.

Mario is huge. There are so many genres of games he is in. 3d Mario, 2d, Mario kart, Mario tennis and so on. They make so much money and generate a lot of sales.

I dont think pokemon is as big as mario

List of highest-grossing media franchises - Wikipedia

No idea how accurate Wikipedia is on this matter. But i think for a lot of the biggest franchises, games/movies aren't even remotely the biggest sales. Harry Potter seems like an exception to that.
Pokemon games and movies are dwarfed by its cards and toys, etc.

Not sure if the numbers are accurate but Mario doesn't have that. Let alone on the level of Pokemon/Star Wars.

I dont particularly think the Mario numbers are accurate though. Mario Kart 8 sold like 50 million copies, probably primarily at $50. That would be 2.5 billion right there.

I really doubt we know how much each franchise generates

Toys might he a huge factor for pokemon and starwars true. But Mario is now expanding from beyond video games and with a smashing hit. Its a franchise that is already huge but now is growing beyond its original medium.

Now tracking ahead of Lion King domestically with a much higher trajectory.

I'm sure it'll be in the top 5 in a couple days.

That Mario number for games is up until 2002 lulz. Should be over 50b as a franchise

A few big guesses here:
Mario Kart: 4 billion
NSMB: 1.5 billion

I doubt they're over 50b as a franchise. Probably something like mid 30's.

I mean in total with everything. There have been like 100 Mario games since 2002. They also have the Lego toys and now the movie and more toys.

the merch is where huge franchise make their "real" money.   Mario is far behind things like spiderman or Pokemon but the Lego thing is a good first step.

It's funny that I made this thread just talking about opening weekend, but the movie has come very close to beating the full run records.

Will probably pass lion king remake to become #2 animated domestic but I don't think it'll beat Incredibles 2. Worldwide I have no clue how much momentum it has but it's not gonna beat Frozen 2 or the lion king remake.
