Already it has made more than any other videogame movie domestic.

It's really hilarious seeing non gamers try to analysis this films success.

They either treat Mario as untouchable as if no other game IP could compare, or they treat every game IP as comparable and think a new ratchet and clank movie would make a billion dollars.

God I wish r&c could be that popular.

just think of how many glorious new games I'd get if r&c was anywhere near as popular as Mario or spiderman.

What game IP do you think can pull this off?

Honestly I can't think of any. I think a really good assassins Creed movie could do 500-700 million box office.

Probably only a good GTA movie could pull these numbers, and I doubt it because it would be rated R

if well made I would say:
Zelda
Luigi's mansion with a Halloween release
God of war
the last of us
uncharted
call of duty
assassin's creed
fifa if you count that.. kind of cheating there.
GTA
red dead

I think that's a huge part of it. Doesn't need to be the best movie, but execution matters so so much as the two Mario movies show.

It's pretty hard to have the animus modern day stuff fit in a movie without confusing audiences. The recent AC movie could have been better but I can't picture a version that would be a huge mega hit. Plus it's kinda generic.

Potential and execution matter more than anything else. 50 movies so far have hit a billion dollars and a fair amount of them were not based off the biggest IP.

Pokemon with the right execution could definitely do it. Detective Pikachu did well but billion dollar movies need to be predictable. A talking pikachu solving crime is not what people expect when they hear "pokemon movie."

Zelda - not as big as Mario, no where near close.
Luigi's mansion with a Halloween release. These is a Mario IP.
God of war. Would be an R rated movie, and the IP isn't as big as Mario and doesn't have the mass market appeal (movie wise). It could do very well, we will have to see how the show does to give us an indication.
the last of us - it could do very well indeed, but I doubt it could pull the same numbers.
uncharted- we already have an uncharted movie and it did 400 million world wide. Mario already passed it in less than a month
call of duty - i doubt a modern military movie will do as good. First it would be R rated, second its too political.
assassin's creed - I think this one would have the best chance of doing great numbers. But I doubt it would be as big as Mario, and it would need to be really good. We already got an AC movie and it flopped
fifa if you count that.. kind of cheating there.
GTA -
red dead
For GTA and Red Dead... what is awesome about them is the world and gameplay in those worlds. They got awesome stories and story telling. But im not sure how they would translate to movies. Could be, but I just don't see it doing as good as Mario is now. But possibly.

Well there is my quick take on each franchise.

I think the issue isn't just the strength of the IP, and how good the movie is. But what draws audiences to go to movies now days.

John wick 4 is awesome. Everybody says its awesome. Its an established franchise now. It will probably end around 400-450 million. Im just using this as an example.

With assassins Creed they just need to ditch the whole animus stuff. Just make the story about altair or ezio. Keep it there. No need for a modern day story line.

I agree excursion matters so much with these game to movie/tv show adaptions. Uncharted was alright, so it did alright numbers. TLoU was great, so it did great.

This movie is at 670 million so far. Its not that other game franchises can't be successful as movies. Its just that this one is doing insane numbers.

It's literally on track to be the biggest animated movie ever. That's a high bar!

I wonder what the revenue split is on this.  I wonder how many times Nintendo can release a billion dollar movie.

it's often said "Nintendo is the Disney of gaming" but maybe Nintendo is going to be the Disney of movies too ...

It hasn't quite hit a billion yet, but it will in the next day or so.

Will be #10 biggest animated movie overall.
Still behind Toy Story 3, 4; Frozen 1 and 2, and some others.
Wikipedia list

The #1 listed movie there is The Lion King Remake (which may be considered animated or live action apparently), which it is actually trending behind just a little bit:

The-Numbers domestic comparison

But I think that's likely to change.

Yeah it will be crazy if it manages to be the biggest animated movie ever. I think at that point it might be the most valuable entertainment IP ever
