Can we talk about how the character corresponds to the camera?

Playing God of War back to back with Ghost of Tsushima has some oddities.

God of War: Kratos is always facing the direction of the camera. Walking to the left doesn't change the camera. Kratos just strafes to the left. Kratos is also pretty much the closest thing to the camera (not exactly, but basically enemies basically can't get closer than Kratos).

Ghost of Tsushima: almost of the above happens in GoT. You walk completely separately from the camera. Walking left doesn't change the camera, but Jin will make a complete turn that way. He will never strafe. He will never look to his side.

This is something that I think a lot about. Sometimes cameras are frustrating and they don't quite work the way one would hope.
At the same time, I think I would need to start up a game to see what each one exactly does.

I think there are some alterations on the latter:
- I think some games will have the camera follow the direction the character is going.

- I think some games will have specific angles where that happens. (for example if you turn your character all the way around, the camera will flip).

I'm not sure how much of my frustrations with GoT are with the camera itself or if it's just due to how different it is from other games.

Dark Souls has a similar system to Ghost of Tsushima, but I feel like the lock on system feels a little better for me.

Ghost of Tsushima's camera is pretty much the default platformer imo, dating back to Mario 64.

GOW's stiff camera is a lot more rare. Off the top of my head, I can't think of other games that only use it. EDT: Dead Space

Many many games use the ghost system for platforming and the gow system for shooting, like Uncharted, TLOU, and Control.

Yeah I think so. But I think some games tweak it in various ways.

In a weird kind of way GoW has a first person camera.

Same side effects:
- able to strafe
- character moves in the direction of the camera

Racing, Fighting games have this camera style.

Yeah there are definitely a lot of ways to tweak it.

It's kinda odd that characters look a different direction than you. I think there is a fun mix between the two where the character can walk and spin, but their face is always looking the same direction as the camera. Can't think of a game example, but something like this instead of strafing:
Premium Photo | Multiracial and satisfied young businessman turning his  head and looking at something attentively stylish man wearing white shirt  walking to the workplace success people and business concept

It's something I experimented with in Forged Odyssey and carried over to Hapax.
