consoles really aren't that expensive compared.  controllers are practically more expensive.

literally no one is the perfect balance of poor/rich where $300 for a series S is too expensive but $150 for a streaming micro console is affordable.
If the streaming system is $150 then yeah who the heck would buy it, but I'd expect $50. Sold at cost to get people hooked on gamepass. People buying this system need to buy gamepass ultimate to stream.

it's not going to cost $50 when just the controller costs $60.

$100 is the very minimum ($60 + $40).

lol so much for Warren being an insider.

I'm sad that my new Samsung tv is just a year too old for this.

Microsoft's Phil Spencer: Gaming 'somewhat resilient' to weak economy

QuoteToday, Spencer said, Microsoft gives people choice in how much they'd like to spend if they want consoles. The company offers the $499 Xbox Series X and the less powerful $299 Xbox Series S. Microsoft subsidizes the cost to the tune of $100 to $200 per console, with the expectation that it will make the money back on sales of accessories and storefront purchases, he said. It's up to gamers if they'd like to pay $10 or $15 per month for Game Pass subscriptions. They can also buy games outright, or play certain games for free.

Spencer said he doesn't think Microsoft will be able to keep the prices of games constant forever. But they can provide impressive amounts of entertainment in comparison with other pursuits. "People can play video games for hundreds of hours," he said.

I thought this gen was sold near cost. Am I wrong or is this the first instance of them saying otherwise?

the only official statement ever said was from the epic trial where MS said they have never sold a console at a profit.

the web claimed it was "at cost" but that statement didn't come from MS.  ..it came following some analyst claiming the bill of materials was around $520.  bill of materials misses a ton of costs though.  R&D. shipping. retail cut.  licensing for Blu ray.  ect.

in the end we have no way of knowing.  just guessing.

I assumed they're losing money but figured it was close to break even.

Yeah I guess it has just been speculation on the Microsoft side.

Wonder why it costs Microsoft so much. PS5 has very similar performance yet has been sold for a profit since last year.

do we really know that PS5 is being sold at a profit?

raising the prices outside of America doesn't sound like a console that is being sold at a profit.

I do wonder if the costs are being calculated the same way, and how much of an impact different exchange rates have.

Microsoft's Xbox streaming console 'Keystone' was pushed back because of its price

QuoteMicrosoft wanted to aim for around $129 or $99 for this Xbox streaming device, says Spencer, and hints that bundling a controller with the streaming console, as well as Microsoft's silicon component choices, had pushed the price up closer to the $299 Xbox Series S.

How they heck did they fubar it that much? Including a controller would definitely bump up the price, but Valve's steam link was $50 and Chromecast Ultra was $70.

It's hard to tell for sure, but from the picture that was shown before, it seems like it must have been a much larger device than either of those.

I wonder if they were intending for it to have more beefy specs for some reason.
