Sony used to release so many games every year, just look at 2011

Uncharted 3
LittleBigPlanet 2
Killzone 3
Resistance 3
Infamous 2
Motorstorm Apocalypse
Socom 4

Do you think this trend will continue and Sony will eventually only have 1 big game per year, or will it reverse as new studious are bought? 2022 is set for 3 big releases.

Well in 2020 sony released

Spiderman miles morales
Demons souls remake
Sackboys adventure
Tlou2
Dreams
GoT

2021

Retournal
Ratchet
Destruction all starts
kena

2022
God of war
Horizon
Gt7
The last of us remake

And jm sure i forgot some games. The thing is development takes a lot of time. And releasing games as frequently isn't as easy. And possibly isn't as profitable as well. Having 2-4 major releases a year seems to work for Sony

The other thing you are missing is GaaS...

Destiny 2 released in 2017 but "no game has released since".  Oh sure there have been tons of content drops and changes but "no new games".   6/7 games in the OP are sequels.  in todays world those games often times don't exist and instead the "core platform" is expanded upon.

I'll bet at some point in this (shaming) future we'll see a year without any releases,.. just expansions.

That happens with non gaas games too.
Sony Bend went from 2012 to 2019 without a new game.
Sucked punch went from 2014 to 2020 without a new game.

Thats because development takes so much time now. Back in the PS1 era both studios could have released 6 games within those time frames. Its not only that development takes less time, it takes a lot more people so building new studios is hard

that's not really the point.  rocket league released in in july 2015,.. more than 7 years later I'm still playing it and there isn't even an expectation of a sequel.   Not even a generation break in hardware lead to a new game we just got an optimized for the new hardware version with cross play.

7 years from now (hopefully) i'll be on my ps6 saying its been 14 years and still no sequel to rocket league...
...or destiny 2.
...or halo infinite.
...or sea of thieves.
...or fortnight.
...or genshin impact.
...or warframe
...or multiversus.
...or whatever ND's MP game is.

i'm not saying absolutely no new games will release every but from the pool of people that create games,..   i huuuge % of them aren't making new games anymore.   it used to be your released a game and then you started making a new one.  often times that new game was a sequel to your previous game and it came out quickly because it was based on the same engine and gameplay.  today those "sequels" still exist but they exist as an expansion to the original game instead of brand new games.

think of LBP 1, 2, 3:
- the sequels added kept the original gameplay mechanics
- ...added a new thing gameplay options like the paint gun or sackbots
- ...created a few levels.

In today's market LBP 2 and 3 probably would not exist.  the platform established in LBP 1 would simply have been expanded upon as DLC or season passes.

so to summarize my point: more development in GaaS means fewer new releases.  you can't expect the legacy 7+ releases a year when so much effort is being put into games that release once and receive continuous support for 2+ generations.

I didn't include all the games for 2011 either. There are more like Ratchet and Clank All 4 One that certainly aren't cared about a decade later, and also a few remasters.

Personally I like having 2-4 major Sony releases a year, but I'm wondering how the situation will change going forward. Do you think 2-4 has stabilized, will it keep getting lower, or will the trend reverse as Sony reinvests in first party studios?

I can agree with that, depending on how much active support the game is getting. Destiny 2 certainly counts as getting a new game's worth of content every couple years.

Other GAAS like Halo Infinite have less stuff than a traditional full release.

I would throw out a few things here:

2011 was a very good year, and 2020 comes pretty close.

There's a challenge that these games take a lot longer. Naughty Dog was putting out Uncharted every 2 years, Killzone was also being put out 2 years, compare that to 5 years for the most recent Horizon game. There were some games that took 5 years or more back then, but it wasn't the norm.

On the whole, I'm pretty sure Sony has more games in production than they have ever had. But that doesn't feel like enough, when they're taking so much longer to happen.

I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years we look at 2022 as being a relatively poor year, focusing more on quality and not quantity.

What I'm more concerned about is that they seem to have slowed down on third party publishing. There are a few that we know about, but I feel like this has to be the first year where there have been none.

I'm going to say the opposite at least to a certain extent...   there are too many games these days

back in the PS3 era there was a lot more releases but many felt skippable.  there are less releases these days but most feel really good and the focus on GaaS means a lot of games just flat out get played more.

instead of a swarm of 12 hour campaigns I know have fewer games but each seem to demand 100+ hours of play.

this isn't specific to Sony btw,..  gaming industry wide.
