so I was pretty hyped for elden ring  and people seem confident it will win.

....but it's been a few months and I've soured on it.  the core gameplay (combat) is basically the same as it has always been since demon's souls. don't get me wrong it's been a good 2 gens of these games but adding jump didn't really change things much.  the game is starting to get samey to me.

but mostly I feel like the shift to open world made the game worse.  I know everyone says it's the best open world game ever but to me it's not even the best souls like game ever,.. Bloodborne was better.  there are moments of the franchise's core risk/reward gameplay but soo much of the game can be cheesed by running away on horse back.  bosses could be de-agro'd and they wouldn't reset their health.   just because we could we took on one boss waaay under leveled where I summoned my friend,.. he soloed it until he died,.. and then I just kept summoning him again and again.

also I got very annoyed at the pointless coop restrictions.   kicking us out after each boss.  preventing horses even on bosses that were designed for horse based combat.  limiting combat areas (which btw my coop buddy and I confirmed is BS because we found a few places where we broke the platforming elements and found ourselves literally looking at each other from opposite sides of a fog gate and then forced to drop game in order to play together again)

at this point my summer vacation forced us to take a break from the game but it's been like 1.5 months since and each week neither of us wants to pick it back up again.

I dunno how GoW:R will feel but the 2018 game played so well I literally couldn't play anything else until I finished it.  it still lingers with me and makes me smile.

hopefully Ragnarok improves on 2018 but even if it doesn't,.. right now I feel like feel like GoW 2018 is a better game then elden ring.  no matter how samey it feels to 2018 I don't think it will feel as samey as elden ring as the 6th release in the "soulsborne" franchise.

It's absolutely amazing to me how much people are passing on God of War.
With one exception, all of SMS's games have gotten 90+.
God of War Ragnarok will almost certainly be an amazing game.

I think chances are good that Elden Ring will win most of the GOTY this year, but I think it'll be way closer than people think.

new complaint.   not so much of the games themselves but of the people discussing them.

"elden ring is a new IP"  while "God of War has been around since 2005"

for fuks sake,.. i don't care what title is on the box there is a very linear path established here:
--> Demon's souls,  Dark Souls 1, Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, Elden Ring    (maybe seikro belongs here but i didn't play so i'm not writing it down)

the games have not been identical but the changes between them have been similarly scoped to any other franchise between numbered entries.  going open world is certainly a change but games like killzone shadow fall did similar transitions while being "part of the franchise".   right now the franchise is "fromSoftware" not the title of the game itself.   hell, the game even has "patches" which was introduced in demon's souls...

GoW 2018 was a much bigger departure from the legacy gameplay.   It was huge change like with metroid prime.    yes it still uses kratos but in all other respects it is different.  it's still an old IP but its more of a "new IP" then whatever title is on fromSoftware's next game...

now to complain about the game itself.

...i was very disappointed by the catacombs.   the boss and environment recycling was too blatant.   if you can't make fresh content then don't make the content at all.  the repetition there was a stain on the overall game.

I think elden ring will. Unless somehow GoW is better than the 2018 one. Which I doubt will be

I'm fairly confident elden ring will win..

I'm very confident Ragnorok will objectively be the better game but it probably won't be better or new enough to "feel" better.  If it was ps5 exclusive I'd maybe have higher hopes but as a cross gen title much of the core experience will have to be refinements of the 2018 game.

I wonder if they'll stick to the "single shot" camera.  I really liked that.
