Oh yay, it brings back a sucky mechanic from DS2.

i decided to read about something that's a tad spoilery but i wanted to make sure i didn't wreck the game for myself and my co-op buddy and i have to say...

....fudge you fromsoftware for disabling co-op after some unknown combination of boss fights have been defeated. i want to play this game co-op and it is sooo unnecessary to disable coop in limegrave. these completely unnecessary inconveniences are fudgy stupid.

The real sucky mechanic:
(As spoiler free as possible)

Certain sequences have instant kill mechanics.
I'm 33 hours in. It's awesome, but at the same time it's a lot. It's a long game and I don't really look forward to replaying.

I know it goes against part of what makes the game cool, but I wish there was more direction.

I hear ya. I'm not saying I hate open world games but I much prefer linear.

linear (done well) nails pacing always keeping you engaged. open world can just leave you floundering or they just direct you meaning it's not really all that "open" and more directed-linear with bad pacing.

Xev has beaten the game already. :'(
He loved it.

Meanwhile, I'm only like halfway done I think.

the more i play the more i'm not seeing the high(er than DS) praise for this game. admittedly i'm still not very far but the most fun i have with the game is when i stop exploring the fairly boring open work and find a "dugeon" and do the linear bits that have the exact same level design as any DS game. all the open world bit does is make large chunks of the game very easy to miss if i don't "comb" the open work for secret entrances or go to the internet to have someone tell me what i missed going ever so slightly to the wrong direction.

To be honest I agree with you.

I think the game is great. But I feel like with everything that gets gained with the open world, something else gets lost.

Like the most rewarding things in the Souls games were finding shortcuts, finding bonfires and beating bosses.

Spoiler for Hidden:
There aren't many shortcuts here, finding sites of grace usually is nowhere near as rewarding since they're everywhere.

And most of the bosses don't feel rewarding either. They're either too easy and feel like I should have fought them earlier, or they're too hard because I probably should have fought them later.

I feel like the game doesn't have the same highs as the souls games.
It's still fun, it's still great.

yeah, great points. that second point you put in spoiler tags is something i particularly grip about in open worlds.

Spoiler for Hidden:
i'm a completionist. in a game like horizon zd where they just tell you on the map where things are i always do the side quests before moving the main story along. i always feel "punished" for that because by the time i get to the main story i'm overleveled so the challenge is gone. but i hate skipping side quest because, i dunno, i bought the game so i want to play the game?!?!? i guess i just feel like coming back to side quests late is even worse because then i'm massively overleveled the content might as well not exist anymore.

with elden ring, since they don't really tell you where to go it's the same problem except now it's not side question content i'm wrecking,.. it's main story line content i'm wrecking if i miss it is early and only find it later in the game. that's not good.

i think my main grip is that RPGs equate "progress" pretty much exclusively with life bars and dps. there has got to be a way to make progress that doesn't break the gameplay for all but the "end game" content.
Good, honest review. He's beaten it 4 times but still thinks it's too hard and unbalanced, which drags it down.

Been watching my brother play. This looks way worse than the Demons Souls remake right?
