where does the story fit into the books?   are they making stuff up entirely or does it come out of the similarian?

It's set before Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings.

Basically they're making stuff up, but they're not allowed to make anything that contradicts anything Tolkien has written. The Tolkien Estate is apparently pretty involved with this one.

QuoteAmazon revealed that the series would be set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before the story of The Lord of the Rings. Shippey explained that the series was not allowed to contradict anything that Tolkien had written about the Second Age and would have to follow the broad strokes of his narrative, with the Tolkien Estate prepared to veto any such changes, but Amazon was free to add characters or details to fill in the gaps between Tolkien's works. The series is also only allowed to adapt and reference content from the Lord of the Rings books and their extensive appendices rather than any of Tolkien's other books that explore the Second Age such as The Silmarillion.

interesting that they would veto anything from the simarillion.   you'd think they'd have to honor those details as well.

doomed to fail most likely.

Well, it will be an expensive failure.
Amazon spent a quarter of a billion just for the rights.
And they're spending close to another $500-$750 million for 5 seasons.

well yes then, a very expensive failure.

does LotR even command an audience anymore?   that was pre-harry potter, pre-MCU, pre-star wars.    i was really excited for the LotR movies,.. 20 years ago.   today my default opinion is "pass".   this will need to be spectacular to even get me to give it a try.

I miss Gravity Falls so much.

It was just a wonderful mix of sweetness, humor and mild mystery.

There was also a surprising amount of death in the show.

by far my favorite Sci-fi series ever.  Seriously feels weird knowing there isn't anymore in the works as of now.

Yup and they're increasing the price in a few days. Might grab it before then

The Boys, LOTR, Expanse, Invincible and the new animated show is a good lineup

Did we talk about Boba Fett yet? It's turning into more of a Mandalorian show now, and didn't feel much like Boba Fett before that. Still enjoy it

I enjoyed mando but haven't bothered with boba. The actor for him didn't feel as fun as Pedro Pascal.
