A few highlights:

- PS5 7.8m vs PS4 7.6m for the same launch time frame
- PS4 now the best selling games platform with 1.577B games sold
- FY20 profit higher than entire PS1 or PS2 gens.
- 337m games sold including 58.4m Sony-published games (vs 43.4m - FY19)

Xevross

Absolutely insane results, +66% revenue compared to Xbox. Record $3.2B profits DURING a console launch year, fudgy nuts.

And yeah profit being higher than the total PS2 gen tells it all, profits for games companies right now are crazy. It makes the price rise sting a bit more tbh, it wasn't necessary at all

And PS5 is the fastest selling console ever, now just outpacing PS4 by 0.2m.

Xevross

Oh yeah of course, PS4 now has the record for most games sold of any console. Beating PS2 with 40 million fewer consoles sold and some years of sales still to go. Crazy.

the-pi-guy

Sony expects this year to surpass last year for game sales

2020:
The Last of Us 2
Ghost of Tsushima
Demon's Souls
Spiderman: MM
Sackboy

2021:
Ratchet and Clank
Horizon
Returnal

It seems likely that there is at least another title or two by March.

Did they not give a ps5 forecast?

I hope ps4 can eventually reach 120m  :o

But that's crazy numbers!

So long red ocean. Now they make more during a system launch!?!?

Their 'forecast' was PS5 will at least match PS4's first full fiscal year (14.8M) - so I guess the forecast is over 22.6M shipped by end of next March.

the-pi-guy

I can't find the exact line, but apparently SIE is looking to invest an additional ~$183.5 million for expanding their studios.

QuoteThe house of PlayStation also plans to increase the number of development personnel in its first-party studios by approximately 20 billion yen year-on-year as the software production capability will be further strengthened.

We know Horizon and GoW are slated for this year.

I know everyone took it for granted that GoW was delayed. But its still officially slated for this year.

With horizon in September and GoW in octobor/November first party sales will be huge.

I dont think you understand what red ocean means. If anything this current climate is the most "red ocean" Sony has ever been in.

With horizon in September and GoW in octobor/November first party sales will be huge.
I dont think you understand what red ocean means. If anything this current climate is the most "red ocean" Sony has ever been in.
Red ocean is where you lose money up front in order to make more later on. PS3 was peak red ocean. PS4 and now PS5 are trying to make a profit all gen long.

red ocean is when you compete for the largest share of the existing market.

blue ocean is when you try to create or expand a market.   wii was blue ocean because it convinced people like my mom to buy one.  it was her first (and last) game console.

what you are describing is "loss-lead strategy".
