Next-gen VR on PS5: the new controller – PlayStation.Blog

QuoteAdaptive triggers: Each VR controller (Left and Right) includes an adaptive trigger button that adds palpable tension when pressed, similar to what's found in the DualSense controller. If you've played a PS5 game, you'll be familiar with the tension in the L2 or R2 buttons when you press them, such as when you're drawing your bow to fire an arrow. When you take that kind of mechanic and apply it to VR, the experience is amplified to the next level.

●       Haptic feedback: The new controller will have haptic feedback optimized for its form factor, making every sensation in the game world more impactful, textured and nuanced. When you're traversing through rocky desert or trading blows in melee combat, you'll feel the difference, magnifying the extraordinary visual and audio experience that's so central to VR.

●       Finger touch detection: The controller can detect your fingers without any pressing in the areas where you place your thumb, index, or middle fingers. This enables you to make more natural gestures with your hands during gameplay.

●       Tracking: The VR controller is tracked by the new VR headset through a tracking ring across the bottom of the controller.

●       Action buttons / analog sticks: The Left controller contains one analog stick, the triangle and square buttons, a "grip" button (L1), trigger button (L2) and Create button. The Right controller contains one analog stick, the cross and circle buttons, a "grip" button (R1), trigger button (R2) and Options button. The "grip" button can be used to pick up in-game objects, as one example.

Looks and sounds fantastic.

so the hand tracking is done by the VR headset itself?

I like it because I'll never lose LoS by turning around and I don't need cameras throughout the room.

I'm a smidge worried about the "orb shape" though because that hints at camera tracking the round shape alla move.

the rest all sounds great.

The controller is tracked by the headset.

The shape doesn't mean much.  Every controller today has that same basic shape.
Quest 2 controller:.

There are a fair number of limitations with the tracking on the PS Move.  A lot of them stem from being a single blob of light. In optimal scenarios, it works great. You can calculate how much smaller the orb is than expected and you can find placement.

But it can easily get drowned out by other light sources.

Other VR controllers use a pattern of lights. Technically, Facebook could just track the curve of the controller.  Still a pattern of lights or tracking the controller itself is how it's done.

These are a lot like the original Rift controllers + Dualsense improvements.

The Index controllers are the best right now, with full finger tracking, and you can let go of the controller. This goes in a different direction though.
Probably cost reasons for the finger tracking, the index has 87 sensors for hand tracking ,and the strap is apparently patented.

I am very surprised though, they are showing the controller so soon after announcement.
I would have expected this like 6 months from now.

yeah, with the previous statement of "not shipping in 2021" we kind of have a lot of information for something that is probably a year out from release.  this is a "top 3" announcement for psvr 2 and it kind of makes it feel like it is shipping soon.  especially with how last minute ps5 information was doled out.

I wonder if they will figure out how to add straps or if the rings compensate somehow.

Huh?
Are there not straps in the pic?

Not the straps I'm talking about.
On the Index controller:

You have the large strap, that allows you to let go of the controller.

Maybe the ring can function similarly.  Not completely sure.

Oh I doubt that. Seems to be a different design philosophy. Do you like letting go of the controller? It seems like something that goes against having buttons.

I don't think it's in opposition of having buttons. It just gives more flexibility.

You can kind of stretch out your hands and making a waving guesture on the Oculus Rift.  So the ring kind of works in that regard, as long as it's not too large.
