ps5 seems like a decisively un-japonese console.
Like every country, PS5 sold out in minutes when it became available in Japan. There's still a big hardcore there, the first 500k PS5s will fly off the shelves if they can supply them. Beyond that Japan gets harder though, PS4 really struggled outside of big Japanese game releases. Demon's Souls is nice to have for launch and it should sell what they can ship for the rest of this year but after that PS5 could be super low in Japan until FF16 arrives.

yeah, maybe you have a point.   ...but how many minutes?   in the USA it was like 10 minutes or presumably 500k consoles.   did it take 15 mintues to sell through a lousy 100k?

weaksauce.

Japan is a lost cause. The market has just moved too far away from home console gaming, even long established franchises like Final Fantasy or Resident Evil have experienced serious drops in Japan since the start of the HD era. Unless some freak of nature new franchise comes out of nowhere and takes over the market, I really don't see home console fortunes getting reversed in Japan.

Doesn't mean they shouldn't still try of course, since 8-9 million consoles are still a lot of machines in peoples homes and because of the disproportionately large amount of devs/publishers in Japan, whose support on Playstation should not be taken for granted. I'd like them to put at least some effort into creating more internal projects geared more towards the japanese market, but I'm not holding my breath there. But who knows, maybe this is finally the gen of Japan Studio, something I false predicted the 8th gen to become, Astro Bot seems like a good start, that will hopefully lead into a full (non VR) game and there's still that Silent Hill rumor...

the astro not vr demo turned into an amazing game.  with the good reception of astrobot on ps5 I hope it also is turned into a full game.

and I like sony japan.  lots of unique ideas that is a breath of fresh air compared to the onslaught of western titles.

...puppeteer needs remastering and a sequel.

Wait wtf 51m GOW? How much did the newest one sell because the others weren't that popular. Must've been around 20-25m before it launched.

Yeah new god of war is probably about 15-20m, most likely the higher end. The last update was 21.6m in June 2012, with Ascension, 3 Remastered and GOW coming out since then.

Switch could outsell PS5 in Japan next week, it sold 139k this week (of sales release).

Xevross

Switch is gonna pass 100M worldwide next year. Not even gonna be close.

It feels like PS2's remaining days at the top are numbered.

Xevross

PS5 went back in stock for a bit on amazon US at some point, seems like it was a fairly substantial restock. Here's the chart changes since before launch:

Yearly:

#35 PS5 (-15)
#56 XSX (+1)
#73 DualSense (new)

November:

#4 DualSense (-3)
#7 PS5 (new)
#28 PS5d (new)
#41 Series S (new)
#45 XS controller (unkown change)

That'll be crazy. It's hard following switch. You blink and it sells another 20 million.

Somehow missed this earlier, guess its not fully official: Xbox Series X/S was Microsoft's biggest console launch in the UK | VGC

Recent UK launches:

PS4 250k
PS3 165k
XSX/S 155k
XB1 150k
Wii 105k
Switch 80k
X360 70k
WiiU 40k

Interesing that Series S was about 1/3 of the sales, that's a bit more than expected. Seems like xbox made it their mission to ship just enough to top the XB1 launch and call it their best ever. I imagine Sony will be the same, although they're not doing that with PS5 in Japan at least.

Saw that thread title but didn't know it included numbers. Nice!

Yeah I guess the title not including numbers is the reason it got buried on Era and I missed it.

I'm thinking PS5 launch will be 250-300k in the UK, hopefully we'll find out next week.

So here's some estimates crossed with official numbers.

XB1 launch day/week (basically the same):

NA ~700k
UK -150k
Europe rest ~160k
Rest of world ~90k
Total 1.1M

The countries launched in were: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand. Series is launching in many more countries (40 vs 13) but most of them minor (except Japan). I think XSX/S matches the XB1 launch in all those above countries, as evidenced by the 155k in the UK. So here's my estimate for the XSX/S launch given that:

NA ~745k
UK -155k
Europe rest ~250k
Rest of world ~200k (Japan incl.)
Total 1.35M

Essentially estimating +0.05M from the 13 and +0.2M from the new 27 launches.
