have we?  i either missed or forgot.  good to know this is coming though.   as far as i'm concerned that is an extra 75 Gb of space relative to ps4.   i should be more than good for next gen.

i feel like we know this too but i'm not certain i'm right,..   BC ps4 games can be installed on a normal (non  SSD) harddrive right?   I have an extra Tb laying around from my ps3 days that i'm not using.   If i can play ps4 games off of it i might just download my favorites to have them easily available.

Quote from: kitler53 on Oct 03, 2020, 02:21 PMthe only think i hope for is ps5 has a better patching system.  back when i played destiny patches were every few weeks.  i had to keep a minimum 80 Gb free in order to download the 1 gb patches in order to keep playing.    annoyed the crud out of me.
It does.

It was mentioned in the Cerny talk.

It is.  :P

SSDs have "overpovisioning" for a few reasons.

Part of it has to do with the way that SSDs write data. Data is written on a higher level than reading. So if you want to make a change to a file, you have to make a copy of the file with the new changes in a new spot.

Imagine when you write, you have to fill an entire notebook.

You have a notebook already with a few pages written in.

In order to update that notebook, you need to start a new notebook, copy the old info and the new changes in one go, and then wipe the old notebook.

So in order to work you need to have a notebook of space available.

My "1TB" SSD and HDD in my PC both have 931GB space available due to the actual GiB units and conversion stuff. Does this mean that the SSD is actually is actually 10% more space than the HDD but it just hides it?

Varies by manufacturer.
Some will sell the drives advertised with less space.

Some will sell a 256 GB drive as a 240 GB SSD after the provisioning. So you get the space you expect.

Right but in this case we have confusion over whether the XSX SSD is actually 1TB or not.

They state 1TB but some people are saying its 4*256GB=1099.5GB=1024GiB. aka its "actually" 1.1TB while PS5 is "actually" 825GB so XSX is a actually even bigger than we thought. I can't find any verification on whether this is true.

Considering the math matches up perfectly with the memory card, I am inclined to believe it's the case.

Okay so I read up on it a bit. It seems like SSD size quotes from manufacturers normally account for the recquisite spare area which an SSD reserves, like Microsoft are calling their SSD a 1TB when actually in structure it is 256GiB x 4 =1024GiB = 1099.5GB or 1.1TB in decimal units.

PS5's SSD in structure is 64GiB x 12 = 768 GiB = 825GB in decimal units.

Microsoft's 1.1TB decimal SSD is pretty standard for a quoted 1TB drive, while for PS5's SSD you'd actually expect it to be quoted at 750GB by most manufacturers, so Sony are being a bit cheeky it seems.

After the SSD reserves its spare area, XSX has about 930 GiB left (~1TB) while PS5 has about 700 GiB left (~750GB). So XSX chip is "effectively" bigger by 230GiB or 250GB in decimal.

However, XSX reserves 128GiB for its OS for a remaining 802GiB for games storage available to consumers. According to this leak, if 664GiB game storage is right then PS5 only reserves 36GiB for its OS.

I'm sure you read already.

Someone on era suggested they haven't shown western demos because they aren't complete yet.

Nah. It was just someone's suggestion. Not a matter of fact.
