Phil Spencer: XGS titles for the "next couple of years" will be cross-gen | ResetEra

Quotehttps://news.xbox.com/en-us/2020/07/16/players-first-you-are-the-future-of-gaming/

QuoteWe want every Xbox player to play all the new games from Xbox Game Studios. That's why Xbox Game Studios titles we release in the next couple of years—like Halo Infinite—will be available and play great on Xbox Series X and Xbox One. We won't force you to upgrade to Xbox Series X at launch to play Xbox exclusives.  Click to expand... Click to shrink...
More at the link. Definitely conflicted about this, interested to hear the discussion.

For the first time in a while the two competitors are taking a notably different approach to what "next gen" means and both have their pros and cons.

Reconfirming the older quote.

Kind of extending it. He said next two years a year from launch.

Sony and MS are going after largely the same market in a mostly familiar way and yet their approaches couldn't feel much different

lol, i hope those xbox guys on vgchartz read this.   they are 100% convience "next couple of years" was measured from the time the quote was said last year thus meaning the cross gen period would expire dec 31 2020.   they are very, very sensitive about this point over there.

yeah, yeah,.. i'm not suppose to talk about that site but we all know we all go there.

You can talk about the chertz. Can't remember the last time I went there.

I've seen the same talk other places too. I really don't get it.

Lol yikes. I have no idea why they are doing this, their games are going to feel very behind in tech for the next two years then.

No more gens bruh.

Games will just play where they play.

Next step is getting rid of competitor's.

it will be interesting to see if this strategy is accepted or rejected by the market..

...but as a consumer i personally hate this.  why the fudge should I want to buy hardware that is only partially utilized so that someone that doesn't upgrade at release can play a game a release .   those guys that upgrade later will still be able to play the game when they finally upgrade to the latest hardware.    it's like the biggest "fudge you" to the early adopters i can think of.

some amount of cross gen is fine.   it's not like every game that releases pushes the hardware to the fullest even at the end of a generation.  those indie or AA games can clearly be release as a cross gen title and that's okay.    ...but to have not even 1 title that even tries to fully utilize the hardware that i'm paying $400 for.   fudge that shame.

Options are great but devs like options too. Lockhart could be an amazing next gen system if it is optional. Easy Xbox One support is also amazing if it is optional.

Yet forcing either is whack. That'd be like forcing all psvr games to support 2d gameplay. Devs are magic with what they can do but that doesn't mean it makes sense.

I really wonder what made MS decide to give lockhart less ram than one x. Maybe that rumor is false because I do not understand it.

Porting series x games to 7.5 gb will be hard. Emulating one x with 7.5 gb is impossible as far as I know.

So instead of lockhart being a new model of the one x with next gen future proofing, it's a completely separate thing. Maybe they really don't want the device to be associated with 4k and higher resolutions? If that's the case, why discontinue one x? That device should be able to keep playing current gen ports at high res for as long as xbox one is supported.

It seems like xbox one x really only existed to win the power wars.

You know...

Really puts into perspective.  Technically the Series S is mostly better than Xbox One X, minus the RAM.  RAM is a big misstep it feels like.

Likely scenario seems like that it has to run previous gen games at original Xbox One settings.

A better (for the player, worse for the dev) scenario might be re-engineering some games to use the SSD to make up for the deficit.

It really makes no sense. Maybe they can leverage the faster RAM and SSD somehow, but even if they could get it to work for every case, it just would have made more sense to put a bit more RAM in the first place.

I somehow skipped over the tweet.
