Most disappointing game

For me it's Kingdom Hearts 3.

I haven't forced myself to play very much of it yet, but the little bit I have is just disappointing.

Spoiler for ability:
The special theme park attacks are just obnoxious. Why are these here?
I literally replayed the first and second titles and I thought they were amazing. It had even been so long for the second one that I actually felt like I was playing for the first time. I still thought it was amazing.

I had waited like 15 years for KH3 and I genuinely can't stand it. The levels feel big to the point of irritating. The gameplay itself feels like they stopped taking the game seriously and instead just wanted to make a stupid Disney advert.

Spoiler for minor story structure spoilers:
Each game has also progressively gotten more about just retelling the Disney stories.

The first game really had nothing to do with the Disney stories. It was a story about these princesses that held the key to a door. The fact that they were Disney princesses just seemed almost like a coincidence.

But with the second game, most of the world's started just ripping off the Disney movie story. With a couple of exceptions.

So far it seems like it's getting worse.

/Rant.

I still need to play kh3 but uh oh that's not good sounding.

For me No Mans Sky. I didn't care about the scale as much as other people but on paper it was my dream game. Space games are my jam and I love proc gen ones. Started having fears when they lied about planet sizes. Then they released a timelapse showing the planets not rotating while saying they do rotate. I lucked out and didn't buy it due to the tech issues at launch.

That was when all the real issues showed up. I was hyped for the game yet it ended up being really really bad based off reviewers I trust. My favorite reviewer had this to say.

If it wasn't for all the likely fraud involved I would have picked it up when it was cheap just to try it out.

i've been playing the first KH game when i'm at my mother-in-laws house since it is a decent enough game over remote play. i'm not that far in but so far (just finished the alice in wonderland section) but so far i'm not that impressed.

i can imagine it being good in its day but as i never had a ps2 this is my first playthough and it hasn't aged well.

as for my disappointing games:

diablo 3

this was my first diablo game. the franchise as a whole has recieved such massive praise that i felt like i had to play it. i found the whole game to be exceedingly average and not praise worthy. my opinon is that housemarque is much better at this genre.

little big planet 3

MM did not develop the game and it really shows. the choices in music was very lack luster which stands out as a critisism because MM always did so great in this area. the level design felt uninspired. ...and worst of alll LBP poor loading performance was greatly exasperated but the massive number of level links.

i'll bet the UGC benefitted from the new features but i never liked the UGC much. exactly why i didn't even buy dreams. i really wish MM would just go back to making games not game engines.

The first game is very clunky.
I still love it, it gets slightly better with some of the new move sets, but overall the game has a clunkier feel to it.

Second game gets a bit better.

But the third game just has a weird feel to it. I don't know what it is exactly. Like it almost feels both smoother and clunkier to play than the others.

Dreams makes sense in the progression for UGC. Go from building levels to building small games to building whatever.

But after that, the only thing they can really do is fine tuning stuff. And it only makes sense to do that if it sells well.

KH3 I can understand, although its the only KH I played so I can't really say anything. I just found it dumb fun basically, and the Disney stuff was kind of enjoyable when it wasn't a 1 for 1 rip-off of a movie I'd already seen.

Diablo 3 I can also understand, it depends when you played it and if it clicks for you. D3 has been like 3 different games in its life. At launch it was the 4 difficulties that you could play through with the last being super hard. All gameplay was grinding gold for the auction house. Then the AH was removed and the entire difficulty system revamped, so it was grinding something like the alkeizer run on the highest monster level you could manage to try and get gear improvements. And finally it reached what it is today with the expansion launch and loot 2.0. Seasons and adventure mode have made the game fantastic imo, I keep going back and have 1000+ hours just on PC.

So D3 was disappointing at launch but after 2-3 years it finally got to where it should be and is the absolute king of fun, satisfying isometric action-RPGs still in 2020 for me.

LBP3 I 100% agree with, compared to MM's entries its straight up terrible. I got sick of it and dropped it after just a few hours, even after trying to have some fun in co-op with my friend.

One of the first to come to mind for me is Destiny. I was so, so hyped for that game and it ended up just being a generic FPS with a shame tier story and no reason to carry on playing it once you were done. I know they eventually fixed it and added a lot, kinda like No Man's Sky, but it was very disappointing at launch.

The Crew 2 and AC Odyssey recently both suffer from the same thing: Ubi open worlds getting too big, empty and devoid of ideas. Both of them were very disappointing to me after showing a lot of promise before launch. These are two of the few PS4 games I bought on launch day since I was excited for them but ended up dropping them part way through.

Controversial opinion here: I know it isn't a game but for me PSVR is super disappointing, its pretty horrible hardware with only one great game that still suffers from looking horrible and causing nausea (Astro Bot). PSVR basically ruined any interest in VR for me, I know everything else is probably much better but I don't care to try now, if its anything like PSVR it'd feel like a waste of money. I'm glad it was a present and I didn't spend my own money on it, my PSVR has been collecting dust since about 2 weeks after I first got it.

i played the original destiny for a year starting a launch. i got back into it for a year after ps+ game me the taken king for free.

i'd say destinys raw gameplay is second to none. no shooter i've played feels quite as polished and fun as destiny. ...but everything else was just not planned out well.

i quite destiny because of a lack of content. i really liked the strikes but it got too repetitive.

destiny 2 had a ton of content but the season thing killd it for me. there is no sense of progrssion when your progsssion is wiped out every 3 month. the random loot generator was annoyingly grindy. the lack of matchmaking in raids excluded me from end game content.

i want to love the game but i just can't.

Ohh yeah I agree with kitler that destiny's gameplay was amazing and probably the best fps gameplay I ever played. However I was very disappointed by it.

To me I wanted it to be a massive open world sci fi action game. With a massive lore, shame loads of aliens and amazing art and level design to match the crazy art they showed.

I enjoyed destiny for what it was. But I was expecting it to be one of my favourite games of all time. I put 70 hours into it, which for me is good and shows I liked the game. But also the expensive DLC and lack of content killed a lot of potential the game had

There are two sucky things about the current VR headset's displays/lenses.

The first is that they're relatively low resolution. You need like 2 4K screens to have the same kind of experience that most people have with a 1080p television. PSVR especially was one 1080p display.
Text was pretty much always unreadable.
It reminds me of my 37" standard definition TV that I used to have. It was a wonderful monstrosity, but it also sucked to look at. The pixels were like the size of my thumb. (Exaggerating of course, but not by much...)

The other sucky thing is that they have a really small sweet spot. If it's on your head a little wrong it looks 4x worse than it should be, and most of them already don't look good.

I'm hoping that PSVR 2 brings a massive improvement in this area. Anything short of Index's resolution is going to be disappointing to me. And it'd be great if it was higher than that.
