Jesus's ballsacks. Rth (most reliable guy on BOT) says Friday is looking $148-153m. I don't even know what to say. ~$90m on a Friday is just completely and utterly outrageous. No film outside of IW has even managed a $70m day before even on a holiday or saturday. Even IW "only" hit $82m on its saturday. This is a Friday... people are at work and at school... this is a 3 hour long film. How the fudge has this happened :O

This is monumental.

Doubling Infinity War's record opening and posting a $1280m+ worldwide debut is not actually looking that unlikely right now. Here's a chart of the worldwide opening weekend record over time:

2002Spider-Man$125.9
2002Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones$179.3
2002The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers$189.9
2003The Matrix Revolutions$201.4
2003The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King$250.0
2005Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith$303.9
2007Spider-Man 3$381.7
2009Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince$394.0
2011Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2$483.2
2015Jurassic World$525.5
2015Star Wars: The Force Awakens$529.0
2017The Fate of the Furious$541.9
2018Avengers: Infinity War$640.5
Gets beaten fairly regularly with small jumps, until Endgame. If Endgame does post something like $1280, how long is that record going to stand? This is a once in a lifetime event. $1280m opening would also mean IW legs get Endgame to over $3.1b worldwide as well... yeah... Avatar is in danger for the first time ever.

Also I feel like its gonna be Endgame which gets the credit for all these records, but Infinity War is the film which earned them. It was so phenomenal and likely introduced so many new people into the MCU over the last year and that's how this is possible.

Make it happen boys.

This is not real life. Marvel put me in an alternate reality when I watched Endgame.

Friday estimate $157M from Deadline. One hundred and fifty seven million. Friday. That's a $97M true friday, $28M higher single day than any film not called A:IW. The ALL TIME opening weekend record is going to be beaten, WITHOUT EVEN COUNTING SUNDAY. WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. Jatinder on BOT is still saying more like $151-152m though.

And.... A+ cinemascore, only the third MCU film to achieve this. Legs are going to be brilliant. This is going to make a shame tonne of money. No movie with an A+ cinemascore has ever had legs below a 3x OW. If that still holds for Endgame, we're about to see $1B domestic for the first time ever... and Avatar WW is toast.

I told you it can beat avatar.

But the question is how much of this massive opening stole from its legs. Without a doubt it's a bit more front loaded than other films. I don't think past successes can be measured to assess this film, it's on a league of its own.

Doesn't mean I am necessarily saying it's legs won live up to its massive opening though. Based on performance so far I can easily see this passing 3 billion WW when all is said and done

Yeah well with expectations what they were before the weekend it was looking very unlikely and its still very hard. Even if this pulls off an incredible $1.2b opening weekend it'd then need to add the entire gross of the 5th best grossing film of all time to pass Avatar. Avatar is so crazy.

We'll have a good idea after the second weekend. But also we'll get a good idea tomorrow too, if Saturday is only flat or even falls a bit from Friday we'll know everyone was just rushing to see it as fast as possible.

Anyway, Friday estimate has been upped to $159m now, apparently preview number might have been a slight underestimate.

Only 4 movies have made over $1.7 billion. $3 billion is insane.

Yep!

Disney going with official estimate of $156.7m for opening day. Beats TFA's record by $37.5m and its expected to rise by a couple million when actuals come in. Weekend heading for around $350m, absolutely crazy. The 17th best opening weekend of all time without counting saturday or sunday, just wow. Almost $100m or an approx. 36% increase on the previous record. Saturday looking over $100m+ so the new OW all time record will be set before we even count Sunday. ROTJ was the last film to achieve that.

Apart from Jurassic World, the best a non-Disney film has managed is a $169m debut weekend (HP:DH2), this almost beat that.

Worldwide opening weekend record of $640M is beaten without even counting saturday or sunday...
