I think this specific design started last year at Paris Games Week.

But for real though, it looks really nice with the colorful nebulas added in. I love that it's the backdrop for Sony's countdown streams and I hope it's part of the main show.

Apparently there were 7 world premieres last year. So more than double. Counts as a new game announcement. Maybe they expanded it this year to include first proper showings of games, so AC Odyssey, Cyberpunk and Shadows Die Twice might count.
