I loved the film at release but kinda got a bit indifferent thanks to all the hate. The past few years however have had me falling in love with it all over again.

The story sucks according to lots of people but even if it did suck, the movie is so incredible as an event.

For starters, think about the insane quality the alien world. This is an alien forest in Star Trek:

Look at every movie with an alien forest since 2009 and you'll see Earth+a little bit of fake stuff added on if you're lucky. Meanwhile in Avatar the whole planet actually feels alien. Earth looking flora is rare instead of the default.

Then if you talk about fauna it just gets crazy. Avatar had tons of aliens in it. Navi, Banshee, turok, the huge jaguar, the smaller jaguar, the monkey thing, the rhino things, the horse things, the weird face thing that gets hunted, the spinning lizards, etc. I think it had more alien animals than every big movie after it combined.

You also have all the cool sci fi parts like this scene:

Eh, it's just so much better in a lot of ways than every movie since. What are your thoughts?

darkknightkryta

I didn't watch it in 3D so I wasn't blown away.  I thought it was average.  Not bad, not good.

Still one of my favorite movies ever.  yeah maybe not for the story, but getting immersed in the world was awesome.

I'm so mad that avatar 2 is now 2020.   Hopefully that sticks but we shall see.

Raven

I feel the same way now that I did then. I felt it was highly overrated.

3D was great only if you already liked the movie.

Well maybe it was overrated at release, but the negative opinions came out strong only a few months later. Everyone seemingly hates it nowadays.

I didn't see it in 3D but was still completely blown away. I absolutely loved it for all the reasons you talked about in OP. I also think the story is okay and I like the action sequences. I had no idea it got so much hate, I thought most people liked it.

Still one of my favourite movies, I can't wait for the sequel.

Great movie but not the best from Cameron.

Titanic is still insuperable.

And The Terminator and Aliens are better than Avatar.

Most people did but then when it started breaking records and becoming literally the most successful film in history, a super strong "overrated" crowd emerged. Practically every time I've seen it brought up online, people talk about it in a negative light.
