Is it safe to sell items that only have "Sell to merchants"  Stuff like the ancients stuff.  Or do I need those for trade ins for weapons and armours?  I'm full.

THe thing on the right is all it's used for. If it only says sell to merchants, then that is the only use for that item.

i find myself selling alot.. up to almost 20k shards

I Sold everything. Often ran out of stuff for crafting since I just sold it all. Any non purple mod was sold without reading it.

I don't sell unless I need space.  I've upgraded every capacity pouch so far except for one.  Just need a racoon skin.

Pretty much what I did with the mods too.  I didn't sell much else but I usually stay around 10k shards.  Now that I have everything I need though i could sell all the machine hearts and lens and stuff.

I sell everything except the stuff that is used to craft ammo/health potions. Once you've upgraded everything in the crafting section and have bought all the best weapons, there's no point in keeping the other loot you get from killing enemies.

I also sell blue + green modifications because they are not as good as purple.

Same. Plus you can buy all machine parts in meridian so there's no need to keep any hearts/ lenses

SHops overcharge for them though.
