Well look at the state of Japanese development.  Most of them ran to handheld, handheld collapsed and they're way behind on console development.  It doesn't help that Japanese gamers turned into a weird bunch where they exclusively buy Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest, with not much else.  Bandai Namco and Koei are more or less the same and are what they were.  Capcom has collapsed by burning through a lot of money and keep pushing the cellphone in game purchase scheme in their retail titles (This idea's failing....),  Square Enix just doesn't know how to develop anymore.  Sony shifted most of their development resources to Santa Monica and Guerrilla.  Nintendo doesn't have a press conference at TGS.  Though, there's a reason they shifted their conferences to Tree House, or whatever their stream conferences are.

While I do agree about the market, there's still enough stuff already announced or rumoured that making a good conference should not be a huge problem.

DQXI is supposedly coming out in less than a year (if you choose to believe that), so it's absolutely absurd that we still don't have any direct footage of that. KH3 is long overdue a new trailer as well. Ni No Kuni 2 should be given a push in Japan as well, so they should have shown gameplay of that around here (or is the game that early in development still?). Gravity Rush 2, TLG and GT Sport (all of which will be shown off during streams at TGS itself btw.) should have been no brainers for the show. That Cygames/Platinum title shouldn't have been revealed a couple weeks ago but at this conference along with the other Cygames game that they showed a little teaser of a couple weeks ago. Where is that Valkyria Chronicles games, where is Yakuza 6, where is almost everything that has been shown off last year (or maybe I'm just imagining it, that there was a lot of stuff present at last years show, that's still not released that's now missinig in action)? Why was Resident Evil 7 shown off in such an awful way instead of just showing a real gameplay demo? Is that rumored Sony Japan JRPG real, or much rather ARE those Sony JRPGs real? We've been told about that so long ago, that at this point that game should be moving closer to actual completion should it not? Are you working together with From Software again? Isn't that project ready to be shown off by now?

Admittetly the last few points are a bit wonky, but overall I really feel that the japanese content coming to PS4 could make for a great conference, but somehow the japanese don't seem to care for doing things like that.

There's content, no doubt about it, but none of it will sell in Japan.  Most of those products are niche, which is sad and terrible.

? A good number of titles I listed will be big to very big in Japan. DQXI will be massive, KH3 should be big, RE7 will be big (though that was technically shown off), Gran Turismo is still big in Japan, Ni No Kuni 2 can be pretty big (you're focusing all the sales that the PS3 version of the first game lost to the DS version in Japan after all), Yakuza 6 will be pretty big and has some big japanese names attached to it.

Of course you have to somewhat rethink your definition of "big" in Japan for 8th gen consoles, but all these games would have still garnered good attention and a good response from Japan as well as the west.

Dragon Quest yes.  Kindom Hearts?  It was "well" when it was on PS2.  Think it will sell gangbusters after such a long hiatus?  I don't think so.  Resident Evil hasn't sold more than a million in Japan in a long while, this one will be no different.  Ni No Kuni sold "okay" world wide.  The DS version sold terrible.  No reason to think this one will sell better than the first, I think it will sell worse, in Japan.  When was the last time Yakuza sold a million in Japan?  Maybe the first?  Why will this sell better than its predecessors considering the PS4 is selling worse than the PS3?  Japan sales of games haven't been healthy for a long while.  Few games here and there sell well, but not much outside of Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter.  I actually think Final Fantasy 15 is going to sell worse than 13, which is going to be a sharp decline considering how much they used to sell.

A hiatus often helps sales.  People are often interested to see a franchise come back.  Just look at Star Wars 7.  More than doubled what the previous movie did at the box office.

Probably never.  Yakuza 1 only sold ~1 million total, which included a US and EU release.

Kingdom Hearts 2 was liked, Phantom Menace to Revenge of the Sith weren't :(.  Though a too long hiatus can hurt too.  You can lose a lot of interest.

Think it really depends on how good the game ends up being.
Really good, and it could be the best selling KH game in Japan.
Not so good, and it could be the worst.

When did I say that "big" = "selling a million in Japan"? I said that we had to redefine what we call big in Japan (because PS4 games in general sell worse over there than past iterations) and all these games fall into the category of being big PS4 titles in Japan, while mostly also having a decent global pull.
