Quote from: DerNebel on Aug 31, 2016, 10:17 AMI just went to my local electronics retailer and they had a sign that said "100€ off of every PS4 bundle" plus just one PS4 left. Obvious clearance is obvious.

Really makes you wonder what the  Slim will cost, if retailers are will to cut this much on their own just because a new one is coming. Of course they could also just be worrying that they'd never get rid of these systems once the Slim and Neo us out...

One more week.
last quarter PS4 did 3.5 million, while priced at 350$. i doubt they need to cut the price more than 50$. 299$ is a nice price point, they would lose a lot of potential profits at 250$, and the extra sales wouldnt make up for it.

I got that on sale for like $25 ages ago.  Still have yet to play it.

Edit: on the ps slim.  Obviously Sony had 2 choices.  Go as cheap as possible or go cheap but also add in features like UHD bluray which would drive up the price.

I think they've chosen the perfect option.  They weighed up the benefits.  Would it be worth including it if it meant it would cost an extra $50?

I bet they worked out it wouldn't add many additional sales but the ability to cut the price by $50 would.  Now who knows if they'll actually retail it really low.  I reckon they will try and maximise profits.  Really cheap to develop ps4 slim at $299 for as long as possible. Then on BF or whenever they can cut down to $249.

One thing for certain though I can see a model in 2 years retailing for $199 and at a profit too.  So in terms of a business move I think this is absolutely thr right option.  Let the neo model push the UHD features.  Which is better because it gives people another legitimate reason to get the more expensive model.

$299 looks pretty poor when your competition offers a console that has a 4K bluray player included for the same prize. I'm still feeling $249.

H1z1 console development paused.  Daybreak are definitely going to be slow as fudge getting their games out on console.  I've completely lost interest in them.

ehh. thats not really gonna matter a lot. sure, fanboys are gonna talk about 4k play back, but the general public wont give a crud.

I wouldn't be so sure. Especially considering that going by the leaked box they aren't necessarily bundling a game in with the slim. I can get a PS4 with no game for less than 300€ easily right now, releasing the slim for the same price would be kind of a joke.

Expect people being pissed if the slim is $300.

no way is the mass market going to be pissed that a new PS4 slim got released thats 50$ cheaper than the regular one. sure, you can find good deals on a PS4 now, but that doesnt mean you wont be able to find ones on the slim.

Yeah that that's what I think. Sony will also have CoD and Watchdog bundles at $299 going into the holidays and drop the unbundled PS4 Slim to $249 for black Friday.

It's not a deal though, the normal prize for a standalone PS4 on Amazon here in germany is less than 290€.

Sounds like a plan!  They have seen how MS are willing to under cut them despite the xbox being costlier to develop than the ps4.

When they were deciding what to do with the slim I guarantee you they said MS could develop a bare bones xbox with no UHD and sell it for $249 with thr ability to take a loss and go to $199.

That would be bad news.  They don't want xbox fighting back.  So they played it safe and smart.  They went the cheap option.  Which in turn is the most profitable option.

Imo MS made a big mistake with the slim.  They'll find it very difficult to undercut Sony's slim price when the thing is a fair bit more expensive to make. It's like the reverse of last gen when MS went cheap with the 360 and Sony more expensive with the ps3. Just on a much smaller scale.

Yeah but you're comparing a RRP with a discounted price. Plus shouldn't $300 equal abut 250 euros?

Bolded: That never happens in gaming.

All I'm saying is that 299 for a 500gig Slim with no game would not even really be a price cut. $300 for a standard slim with no game would look bad compared to the competition, bad compared to the vanilla PS4 and bad against the Neo, if the rumoured $400 price turns out true. It would simply be an utterly shame deal.

Btw. something interesting regarding E3 and the whole Rockstar rumour that was going around.

Sorry for the double post but I'm watching next week's gamescast (through Patreon early access) and in the topic about the PlayStation Meeting Colin just said something intriguing. He said while he originally totally dismissed what people were saying about Red Dead having meant to be at the end of Sony's E3, he's now heard from sources he "absolutely fudgy trusts" that it was meant to be there. And "these sources aren't wrong about anything". I'm guessing it was probably a Sony employee. This makes me think we might see Red Dead at the Neo unveiling.
Posted it here because this thread is a lot more active than the general KF thread and this is more relevant to purely PlayStation discussion.

Just to be clear on this, I'm not in any way, shape, or form substantiating the rumors. I have no primary source(s) here (and, frankly, I haven't been a journalist since 2014, and I'm not really poking and prodding around for details these days... much of the stuff I talk about on the shows, Tweet about, and the like comes to me). I'm simply reiterating that I've heard this same rumor that was originally floating around on (I think) Reddit through a filter that makes me trust that information more, when originally, I was skeptical, if not completely dismissive.
It's important to note that Sony itself (via Adam Boyes back in June, I believe) said that the rumors were false, and that the show was locked. But with the timing of the conference, the Orlando Shooting, and the obvious strangeness of the placement and cadence of the Days Gone stinger, it's crystal clear why skepticism is abound. I'm pretty sure we'll never actually know, but it's fun to talk about, especially with the Neo announcement forthcoming.
Hope that puts things into perspective. Have a good weekend! -Colin
P.S. I haven't dropped in here for a while; thank you for continuing to support the show. It's growing, people seem happy with it, and Greg and I are having a blast doing it.

Edit2: Lookie here PS+ games. And check the like/dislike ratio looks like Sony is giving out a month that isn't pissing off people this time. Which is especially impressive considering the price increase.
