That seems about what I'm thinking, maybe a bit lower due to lack of marketing budget.

1,000 - a lot for Pi's third game
10,000 - a lot for VizionEck
100,000 - a lot for indies
1,000,000 - a lot for A
5,000,000 - a lot for AA
10,000,000 - a lot for AAA
30,000,000 - a lot for CoD
50,000,000 - Very little for Minecraft
100,000,000 - average Minecraft sales

I've got to lower my NMS expectations a lot. It seems great but more niche than I expected.  ~1 million PS4, ~1 million PC lifetime.

it really depends on reviews and word of mouth. there is a lot of uncertainty around this game, is it repetitive, is it boring, what is there to do?  there was some guy who bought the game for 2000$ on ebay (yes, seriously), who said the game has A LOT of things that are secrets and wow worthy, so there might be a lot of things that the developers held back, which might result in very strong reviews and word of mouth. but then again, you cant really take the word of somebody who bought  a game for 2000$ just to play it 2 weeks early.

That guy also said the game was repetitive.

I think the people who wanted NMS to be a walking simulator are going to be mostly disappointed. Despite the "but what do you do" nonsense that the trailers have created, the game seems to be very much a game. The screen is filled with way-points and objectives while the primary game mechanic is grinding for resources. This will probably give the game better reviews and makes it seem more worthy of $60 to me, but it stops the game from appealing as much to the original fanbase.

So are the planets generated with quests?  Or are the quests on specific planets?

I'm not sure. The quests are simple things like "kill 10 ships."
